How about Toughness? And by Toughness, I mean the willingness to endure discomfort to become a better football player and the ability to stiffen and fight back when encountering adversity....

I like all the suggestions above, I would drop natural talent. Sure we'd all love to have a squad of naturals, we could tear up the world, but unless you're really lucky that doesn't happen. To me one of the great things about this game up through the high school level are a kid with less talent than a natural can find a way to be an important part of something bigger than himself by listening to his coaches and working his butt off. To my thinking the kid that understands this lesson of the game will get the greatest return on his investment as he will have learned something that carries over into every aspect of his life after athletics, namely that working hard and understanding what you are doing does return dividends.
TO was clearly a natural, born with superior athletic gifts; Jerry Rice is the lesser pure athlete (i.e. not as big and strong, not as fast) but which would you rather have? We've got enough whiners in the country right now, what we need are more men who are willing to step up and get the job done where they work, in the community, and with their family. Football up through high school offers any young man willing to make the sacrifice the opportunity to learn how to do that.
Jeepers, I hope that didn't sound preachy, not my intent, just a strongly held belief.

I want Humility, Loyalty, Courage, Perseverance, and Self Control
in order to develop these, I want my players to practice these 11 Commandments
1.Give your absolute best effort at all times. 2. Don't be too good for anything. 3.Be Coachable. 4. Show up at all practices and events on time. 5. Obey all training rules and outside laws (schools, community). 6.Don't say anything negative about your team or teammates. 7. Push yourself beyond what you think you are capable of doing. 8. Don't back down from anyone 9. Focus on the present task. 10.Do the little things right. 11. Keep your emotions under control.
Our team is still working on #1. I'm really trying to hammer that in their heads. For more info on this, check out the Virtues for Victory in the Free motivational materials link in my signature.

DESIRE TO PLACE MY OPPONENTS A$$ BACK ON THE BUS (and get his girlfriend phone # on the way back) AH , DESIRE IS THE KEY AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN... Sorry for the cap's but I get a little tight when I get to talk en about desire and all to often the lack of .

Toughness............ Mental and physical. I also think it can be learned, and taught and it is one of the things that you use during most every aspect of your life.

All of the above.
I have also always liked the word "Moxie" when describing a good football player.
