I think he's refering to the "Keep the worm warm" story. Several versions but basically it's about 2 ice fishers. One notices that the other keeps catching fish, while he isn't. Finally he goes and asks for the secret and the guy pulls a worm from his mouth and says, "You have to keep the worm warm".

And then he Teaff ate the worm. Baylor ended up beating Texas that day.

I dont know if it counts as a pep rally speech, but Al Pacino's "Peace with Inches" speech near the end of Any Given Sunday is as good a motivating speech I've heard.

Last year at one of the basketball games we had a kid with leukemia speak. He was on the basketball team and had been too weak to play all year. The basketball team was 4-11 at that point but was having the sweetheart/valentines day festivities.
He told the whole crowd about how much the game itself meant to him and how his teammates had helped him get thru all the horrible things that had happened to him. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house.
That night, he played for about 5 minutes (which was all he could do), and ended it with a slam dunk on a breakaway. That was probably the most heartwrenching moment I've seen in my entire life. (they won, too)
