hey guys,
in short: what are the most important qualities in regards to character, that footballplayers in general and at specific positions need?
i am working on a sheet, that my collegues can use when scouting players for our allstate-team. it contains skills to evaluate the talent of a player (not yet technique as we try to get the players who are talented, even if they dont have the technichal skills. fundamenals and technique can be taught. so we are looking for natural skills, talent, athleticism).
additional to the above described "body skills", there are also "mental/character-skills", which i think are a huge factor in a footballplayer. now i'm trying to collect some traits every footballplayer (general characteristics) should have and maybe some that are needed for specific positions (position-specific characteristics).
we scout regular games of the players and we also visit practices to see how they work and to talk to their coaches. so even if its a difficult thing to scout character-traits, i think we can identify things like competitiveness and confidence.
my problem and the reason i ask on the huey board is: what are the most important qualities, that can be observed without spending too much time with the players.
my top priority quality for every player: competitiveness. its necessary to get the best out of you. what do you think?
thanks bo

Three things: personal courage, coachability, and selflessness.

If that kid doesn't go on the field or has to be beaten with a stick to go, He has no business being on that team. And that should be seen in his play throughout a season.

Defensively, watch the plays that go away from the player. If he's fighting tooth and nail to get there as much as he is when it's coming towards him, he's a keeper.

Heart : a combination of competitiveness, and unwillingness to give up --->we do alot of competitive style games that also show aggression and get there muscles sore... one of our favorites is the "ring" drill or "sumo" drill: 2 players, first one to take the other one down, OR push them out of the cirlcle wins..and stays in (king of the ring). this drill shows us: 1) who has the drive to win every time, it also shows us who has the balls to get beat and jump back in again. Size : Height and Weight Speed : 10, 20, 30, & 40 yard times (this also gets us a velocity measurement (velocity = distance (yards) / time (seconds)) Impact Force : Mass* x Acceleration ( acceleration = velocity / time (seconds) ) *we sub weight for mass in the Force equation..since its relative to us it gives us a number to go off of.

I'm a math teacher and my approach is not even remotely mathematical. lol. Defensively speaking: Players who can bend Players who can change direction quickly Players who play heavy Players who use their hands well Sure tacklers Balance Those 6 things will get you on my defense faster than any 40 time and any mental or character qualities, that you look for? and what does playing heavy means? thanks coach

#1 thing, kid has to be able to drop his butt and get in a football position. I call the character traits you asked about his demeanor. If a kid can drop his a$$ and have a nasty demeanor without being a loose cannon, he is a football player!

that's why we use the modified Force Equation, we can pick out some of those forceful kids early. I do want to clarify, the judgments I made above are before pads, so sometimes the kid that looks like stud on paper could be a complete {censored}
