I am a first time HC and preparing for my first meeting with the parents, players and boosters. Do you have any suggestions or thoughts that can go into planning this, things I should communicate, methods that have been successful for you....etc...

Besides all the logistical information you'll share, I'd communicate how you properly teach tackling because you and your staff are ultra-conscious of player safety.

Tell them the truth about college ball and recruiting, ex. Florida State isn't going to offer your 5'10 250 pound offensive tackle son. Set them straight right away on that stuff and it will make it easier down the road trust me.

I ask them to raise their hands if they are related to me. Then I ask them to raise their hands if they are friends of mine. Finally I ask them to raise their hands if they have ever met me before tonight. When no one responds I ask them to think real hard before listening to anyone who says that politics or relationships have anything to do with playing time. I tell them straight that I don't care who their kid played for last year or what allstar outfit recruited them to play arena ball in Texas for a mythical indoor championship. Everybody gets a fair shake, period. Many things can and will affect how much he plays. Is he here? Is he on time? Is he high maintenance? Are you as a parent high maintenance? How is he doing in the classroom? Is he in trouble during the school day? Does he insist on playing a position with 12 guys competing for playing time? This may sound like overkill, but I don't get many questions during the season about little Billy....

In my experience from 13 years coaching (8 as HC) and 6 years of being an AD, parents want to know 4 things: 1. That their child will have a great experience 2. That their child will be kept safe, and or there are trained coaches, athletic trainers, etc. to take care of their child in case of injury 3. You, the Head Coach, will give their kid a fair shot 4. You, the Head Coach, will be consistent with your practices and policies and that you will maintain control of your coaching staff.
