Our HC requires guys to make up whatever conditioning was done on the day missed before they are eligible for any game. Our strength stats are entered into a power index that ranks the players and we emphasize this when we do our depth charts. The no shows will rank low and the players themselves deal with it because we post the results. Has been VERY effective for us

True story, I once had a senior at a program that Id taken over completely rebel against the helmet stickers. He was obviously embarrassed that all he did was smoke weed and sell drugs all summer and didn't have any- so he thought it was stupid. When he finally did earn stickers he refused to put them on his helmet. He and I had to have a little private time together.

Helmet stickers do not necessarily mean you are going to start, they certainly show the desire to win, demonstrates that you have paid the price and have been putting forth the effort and improved yourself. They are recognition for THE OFF SEASON first, then you have an opportunity to make it translate to the field.

Our helmet sticker ceremony where we invite the parents to watch us decorate helmets in the preseason sends the point home. We load up the kids helmets with stickers for attendance and performance in the weight room. Nothing like seeing a kid and parent wait for an award and realize, IT WASNT EARNED, ITS NOT HAPPENING. and the helmet remains plain and undecorated. Meanwhile the kids who attended workouts are getting certain stickers for % attended, certain stickers for mile stones and standards reached and certain stickers for challenges met and status earned. You could be 5th string and have more stickers than an all stater if you out work him. Kids always appreciate swag and helmet stickers are indeed swag. Fantastic idea. Easy to do and could do it the night before the season starts so kids know who put the time in over the summer.

Our offseason rules
1st miss - email notice
2nd miss - strength coach meeting, tells you you've missed twice
3rd miss - HC/AHC meeting, tell you you've missed three times
4th miss - HC meeting, lose scholarship for the year
5th miss - cut
This runs from December to April until spring camp, then resets from May-August, so you can basically miss three times in each period without any penalty. "Excused" absences need prior approval, and we try to use good judgement on what counts as an acceptable excused absence.
