I'm going back to the early '60's.
We played football until it got cold outside, then went inside and played basketball until spring, when we went outside and ran track, then played baseball...went surfing during the summer, then football in the fall.

In the late 60s, my high school had an offseason program that did some conditioning and played "tackle soccer"--but no footballs allowed. When I got my first head coaching position around 1980' I had a summer lifting program. I caught a lot of flack because it hadn't been done in that area before. I don't think I ever went to a 7 on 7 until about 2005.

Played in the late 70's coached in the 80's on up.
In NY state coaches were not allowed to coach athletes in the Off season. A lot of individual stuff & training but formally coaching a team 7 on 7 , summer basketball, etc was NOT allowed. I remember coming back from a frank Glazier clinic, yes, he blew the whistle to change clinicians. We were enthralled with the "Freeze" option of george Deleone & Syracuse. We got our kids together & ran it after school. Next day, the coaches were called on the carpet for practicing illegally.
Times have changed......

30 years ago Foot Hockey (Soccer for the uninitiated) programs in HS were just getting started in our area.
Summer Basketball and Baseball were expanding.
Kids started wanting to "play" more instead of lifting weights and running - working out.
And Football coaches started asking more and more in the Off Season.
