Am I the only one who feels this way? It feels as if every year I love working with the kids, I love teaching the game, but there is always a coach or two who seems to bring me down and make me question if I want to stick around. 9 times out of 10 I feel as if it is the career coach who is willing to stab others in the back to get to the top; other times its the know it all coach who undercuts you in front of the kids and questions you in the middle of practice.
Is this something we all face or is this just me (heck maybe I am that coach to others)?

We don't have any of that on my staff. Thankfully.

We dealt with that a little bit last year with 1 coach, but he is now gone and our staff gets along great. I would never continue to coach with someone like that if it were me.

You're going to have trying people everywhere you go. Do I love every coach on our staff all the time? No, but that's life.

There are guys I coach with who I love and still find times where I'm wondering how long he'd be out if I threw a punch. Just part of the job like any other. To echo what someone else posted, "Most of us get along great, but there's usually one or two slappies who everybody ignores."

Our staff is really close.
We are all in it for the long haul and have no personal ambitions.
I coach LB's, OL, and am the JV offensive coordinator.
In 30 years, I hope to be doing the exact same thing.

This is one area I've been very fortunate in over my career. This fall is my 12th season and fifth different program, but in all those years and different staffs, there's only been one guy I can say I didn't really enjoy working with. My current staff especially is enjoyable as we're on the same page with pretty much everything.

The worst is working for someone who is incompetent, or working underneath someone who's clueless, arrogant, or backstabbing. Nothing kills the fun of coaching faster.
Working on a good staff where everyone gets along is awesome, though. We pretty much have that where I'm at now. There's one guy who's annoying that the HC loves for some reason, but we all just ignore that guy now.

I've been lucky as well. In 33 years I've only had to get rid of 2. I'm the old fart on my current staff. The rest are young to very young but 2 varsity and 1 jv coach were players for me. They will take over in a couple years and I feel honored that I was able to help mold them in a small way. They do come up with great ideas too.

It's like any other job and dealing with people anywhere. Sometimes everybody is top notch, sometimes they're not. If you can't deal with them, move on and hope for better luck in your next place. If you're around long enough, you'll run into all kinds of staffs and all kinds of individuals.

Everyone knows this job requires so much time that if you're not with the right people, it's not worth doing IMO. I understand where you're coming from, but getting onto a better staff if possible might be an option.

to the OP: I don't know you my friend, but I do stand with you in solidarity. I also have a certified douche to deal with. A couple of weeks ago in our position meeting I kept a mental log of how many times he reference himself using the terms "I" "me" or "mine"....got to around 35....10 minute meeting. FML

There will always be jackwagons who think they know more than they know. Usually I just ignore them, keep my opinions to myself and coach my position as best as I can to prepare them for the upcoming opponent.

My current U16 staff is pretty great. Great HC, competent coordinators and psoition coaches, but there is one guy, who sticks his nose in my sh*t all the time. He is a great friend of the HC, so it seems like he will be "promoted" before I will. That's one thing I don't like about the HC.
As PeeWee HC I have 4 assistants. 3 that comes and goes as they like and aren't really that much into it. And then one guy, who is kinda dumb and doesn't know very much about football in general, but works hard and does whatever is asked of him. So many mixed feelings about this staff.
