I'm in my 10th year of coaching, in every single one of those seasons my primary (and usually singular) role has been to coach and coordinate the defense. I don't pretend that I know everything there is to know and I don't think I've got the magic bullet. I'm a good defensive coach, I produce good defensive units. I know there's room for improvement in how I do things.
But that said, I'm finding myself less and less interested in coaching the defensive side of the ball. Anyone ever go through this?

I know there's room for improvement in how I do things. But that said, I'm finding myself less and less interested in coaching the defensive side of the ball. Anyone ever go through this? I have coached both sides of the ball (coaching defense right now and have primarily coached D throughout my career) and feel the same way you do. I prefer coaching offense for a few reasons: 1) I think you get to be more creative. 2) You get to play whatever style you want. On defense, you have to adjust to the other team's style and strengths. 3) I think there's less of a grind in terms of film study, etc. 4) In blowout games, you get your 40-50 points (whether it's in the first half or fourth quarter) and everyone's satisfied. On defense, you may play an offense that couldn't score on your first group if they had all night. But once the game is in hand the scrubs come in, the offense leaves its first group in, and they score a couple of garbage TD's while gashing your benchwarmers. That's a lot more frustrating than a few three and outs by the young guys on offense. And if the scrub offense does anything really bad like throw a Pick 6 or fumble on their own five, hell, that just makes it worse for your D. 5) Another blowout point, we played a team last night that was really bad. Never a threat to score and it felt like a TD any time they got a first down. We ran one defensive call all night. There was no reason to do anything different. It was boring. At least on offense you get to see your boys run 60-80 yard TD's. That's fun. I like coaching defense, but I prefer offense for the reasons above.

One of the more enjoyable parts of my job is being the go-between for the offense and defence. I don't like being oblivious to what half the team is doing.

1 - I am glad you changed your icon, I still picture you as Ron Burgundy personified. 2 - From my readings of your posts, you know sound fundamental defensive football and know how to fix what is wrong. However, you have been in 8 ball situations that don't allow you to always show your true form. 3 - Having an affair with coaching the offensive side isn't bad per se, but still you're cheating on momma.

Why would you want to leave the dark side?

For the last few years I've run the offense Coached the OL and that's all
I haven't coached any defense That said I think I am a solid DL coach (because of my understanding of how offense and OL play work)
On game days I like it, I can focus on O only. At practice it is so boring

nope. Defense is way more of a challenge and I love it. That being said if I were to ever get a HC job I'd probably do the O.

Yes. Been on the offensive side for 5 of 7 years coaching. I'm definitely more comfortable but would love to learn the defensive side more by doing, not just through clinics.

I am an offensive coach mainly, but have dabbled in helping with the d line. I have been going to the defensive meetings since I'm in the box and I like to know what's going on everywhere.

I have been coaching offense only for the last 5 years. We were transitioning as a staff to a new program this year and I had put a lot of thought into trying to switch from OC to DC. I wanted the challenge of something different. It didn't work out that way but I'd enjoy it someday. The only position that I could coach all day every day is OL as there never seems to be enough time.

It has been a fun change-up working with the QBs/FBs & OLBs as a change-up this year, but I look forward to getting back with the OL/DL next year.

I like coaching defense, but I prefer offense for the reasons above. I love that. We have blown out 3 teams this year. Last friday our MIKE backer called the entire 2nd half of the game. Listen boys there are only 4 reasons people watch football and 3 of them are defensive. Offense 1. Long TD plays. It's the only offensive one. No one wants to see a 14 play drive that ends with a 1 yd TD run except your coaches. Defense 1. QB sacks 2. Turnovers 3. Big hits I didn't make the rules, I just enjoy them. I've watched my RB absolutely blast several LBs this year. Those kids didn't fill holes quite as quick the rest of the game. Big hits aren't just a defensive thing. I do know what you're saying though.

My head coach does a good job of understanding the importance of my role as a DC. His pregame speech every week between coaches...he tells me, "hey if you do your job tonight out there on defense tonight...the worst we could do is tie."
But I do get bore with Defense at times. I am in my 10 year of coaching.

OL coach, preparing to be OC next year, perhaps QB coach for one of the younger teams. Nothing is final yet, so if it turns out that I'd be the DC I wouldn't mind that at all! Special teams though.. Who wan't to do SPT? JK, I'd actually enjoy that!

All the time. When I was a junior high head coach, I was involved with everything, so I wasnt bored. When I became a JV d Coordinator, I couldn't care less about offense, problem was the guy I was working with was kind of a tool. When he moved up the other guy who came in didn't know much, so I had to be, because he knew 0 about blocking schemes, he was a "Madden" play caller. Now as a Varsity Offensive Coordinator, during defense time, I take my QBs and we work side drills. Not that I'm not intersted in defense, it's just we've got other coaches who take care of D while I work on getting our QBs better.

I'll tell you one of my favorite reasons for being a DC instead of an OC that happened this week: our offense is spread with 3-4 legitimate threats to touch the ball all the time. Now, some are griping about their touches and not getting "used" properly. I don't deal with that. I can't imagine my Weak Safety going, "Coach, I'm not getting enough tackles." Me: "Sorry, slappy, I'll ask them to run at you more."

I am working on my 11th year as a LB coach and 4th years as a DC. I enjoy coaching Defense, the beauty of the game is found in 11 players executing a call and defending a play flawlessly. Also, I enjoy the process of growing a defense and LB's into great players. And it is fun matching whits each week, with the other teams OC, seeing if I can out smart, out scheme, out coach, out physical his offense.
My creative niche is filled with our special packages, whether it is 3rd and long packages, or option football change up Scheme. The DC before me use to install everything under the sun during the preseason, I have limited greatly what we install during the preseason, but plan on leaving room during the season for a few team specific packages. As a side note, I really enjoy watching Ellis Johnson down at auburn install his special packages each week, he is very creative.
The only thing I would want to coach on offense would be OL, because it has the similar feel of defense, 5 guys working together as one.
