We lost a game in similar fashion one year, though our lead wasnt quiet that big. We were up 26-10 in 3rd rd of playoffs with 10 min to go. We intercepted a pass in the end zone and tried to run it out, well the guy fumbled on the 5 and they recovered and scored. 26-16. We got the ball back went 3 and out. They went down and scored. 26-24. We threw a pick, but stopped them, then muffed the punt with 4 or 5 min to go. They recover go down and score. 31-26 them. We get the ball back and execute the 2 min drill. Score. Go for 2, get it. 34-31. We sky kick the ensuing kick off and they return it for a TD to win the game. 38-34

Meant to add my point. This is the toughest loss I have ever had. At that point we had been to 3rd rd 2 times in 4 years but couldnt get past it. Really thought that this was our year. Very difficult to stomach. I dont think I ever watched the film.

Took over a program that had won 1 game n the last two years, no winning season n 24 years, we finished 4-6 and lost two games on the last play of the game literally. Homecoming, we r leading by 14 with less than 8 minutes, defense allowed them to tie the game up with just under 2 minutes left, also our clock went dark and the refs kept the time on the field, we drove. 84 yards to their 4, game tied with 4 seconds left, used our last time out to kick the winning FB, we win or go into overtime right, wrong, they block the fg and with no time scoop ans score with no time left, our kids catch him on the one as he falls in to the end zone. We lose 40-34. Would have given us our 5th win, most horrible regular season loss I have ever experienced for our kids, players and our entire community

at our school we don't have a strong history of winning. We went through the regular season ending up 8-1, the number one seed in the playoffs and realizing we would have home field advantage for the entire trip through. We won our first playoff game and were playing in the district championship. The team we were playing, we had beat them a few weeks earlier. We had our struggles against hem and their best athlete did not play, he was their QB. We had our worst week of practice that week, it seemed like the kids felt like, "we beat them before, why wouldn't we easily beat them again", despite what we told them.
Before we could blink it was half time and we are down 35-6. we had driven all the way down the field and had 1st and goal on the 3. We rarely get stopped in that situation but yet had a turnover on downs. We scored a TD in the first half but missed the 2 point conversion (we always go for two and are normally very good at it)
coming out from half time I thought we may lay down and die, the other team took it all the way down the field and scored on the opening position. We immediately answered, we then got a 3 and out and scored again. We kicked an onside kick and recovered, to go down and score another time. We find out selves at the bottom of the 4th quarter, having just scored a TD to make the score 44 to 43. there was about 3 minutes left on the clock when we scored, we had stopped this team a lot in the second half but they are a powerful offense who kicked our butts in the first, not wanting to count on stopping them again and knowing that we always go for two we lined up for the 2 point conversion. You can already see how this script unfolds but it gets worse. We missed the 2 point conversion, had our fast kid running to the corner but the defense made a great tackle.
they get the ball and they are slowly driving, we have used all of our timeouts. We get them at about the 50, 3rd and 10. Defense comes up with a huge sack, 4th and long with 1 minute remaining. QB drops back scrambles around, nobody to throw to tries to cut up the middle and gets hit by several of our guys, we are driving him back-crowd is losing it, we are getting the ball back with just enough time to drive and win this came after coming back from down 41 to 6!. one of their o lineman hits one of our gusy and the qb at the same time, lifting the qb up in the air on top of a pile of tacklers. Ref blows the whistle while the kid is up in the air. Qb falls off the pile, looks pretty rough hits the ground hard. flag comes out- unnecessary roughness, we are told one of our kids (who was in the middle of the pile and happens to be one of our nicer kids) threw the qb down from the pile) they get an automatic first down, take a knee and we lose.
not many on staff have watched the film, I have and I dont see anything to warrant a flag, obviously I am biased in this situation but we cant help feeling like we got screwed. Hard one to swallow.
take nothing away from them, they played great and they beat us. Just hard to admit that after coming back like that and having it end on a flag just sucks.

when I was in HS two local schools were playing for the district championship, both teams were 9-0.
Team A - 21 Team B - 17
with 0:11 left in the game, Team A had the ball and it was 4th down, the QB took the snap and sprinted to the end zone to take a safety. When the time expired, no one was around the QB yet he thought b/c clock expired the game was over. He threw the ball up in the air in celebration (just as a defender got near him). The defender caught the ball for a TD.
Team A - 21 Team B - 23

By the way, I think that in the moment, your guts would be ripped out.
The roller coaster of low, high, low would make you cry.
Upon reflection, however, I would feel an immense amount of pride in that team.
The rest of my life would be spent wondering why I didn't get one more rep on our kickoff coverage, or why didn't we squib, or whatever, but ultimately, I would be proud of those players.

The one "bad" beat I have gone through happened a year ago.
First round of playoffs.....down 31-27. 1:15 on the clock, we are on their 25.
We are in doubles, we are throwing PAP off of the jet sweep fake. #2 runs vertical after faking a block, #1 runs a 10 yard in.
They are in 1 high.....safety sees the jet motion and starts to fly up to the line. #2 just flat out runs past the safety and OLB....
QB goes to throw it and as he is pulling the ball back he loses his grip...the ball just slips out...they recover, and we start offseason.
I have been more devastated after a loss....but that was the "bad" beat story I had.

In Week 9 we'd beaten the #1 team in the state. To win the league and make the playoffs we had to win Game 10 against a team with a good defense but a mediocre offense. Late in the game we score to go ahead. Their O isn't very good anyway and their #1 QB is hurt. All we need to do is kick off and we'll be good to go.
Obviously, I wouldn't be writing this if that's how it worked out. Two of the guys on the kickoff team decide on their own to switch lanes. They screw it up, the other guys run the kickoff back for a TD, on Monday we're collecting equipment.

In canada you can lose by someone kicking the ball through the endzone for a point. Team did that last week to move on to the regional finals in overtime. It's called the Rouge.

Forgot about the time we were driving to win the game and instead of spiking the ball to stop the clock so we could kick the game winning FG our qb took a knee and we lost in 3 OT

A team in our area just lost a state semifinal game on a blocked PAT. They were down 24-17 and scored with like 1:15 left in the game with a chance to tie it. The PAT ends up getting blocked and they lose 24-23.
I'd rather get waxed than lose a semifinal game like that.

We lost by 3 in the quarterfinals a few weeks ago, led 14-7 at half. That one was tough enough to swallow, can't imagine being so close to the state championship and squandering it by 1 point on a blocked PAT

Probably this one
State Championship game versus a conference/local rival (we don't have regionals, just seed 1-16 based on points) we beat 17-10 during the season.
We're 13-1 and have 11 kids that sign D1 scollies. Only loss was an 8 point loss to an out of state powerhouse on the road.
Bad omen early, we muff the snap on a punt deep in our territory in the 1st quarter to give them a short field for their 1st score.
Our defense pretty much holds them in check for the whole game, but we turn the ball over 4 times. They have only about 130 yards of total offense but are up 14-10 in the fourth. We finally hold on to the ball and score to go up 17-14 with about 7 minutes to go in the game.
We kick off out of the end zone and you can tell they are ready to give up if we can get off the field. We sack the QB on 2nd to make it 3rd and 12. They convert and proceed to march 80 yards to take the lead and go up 21-17 with about 2+ minutes to go.
Next possession our QB for some reason with all the time in the world checks down and tries to throw the ball all the way to the flat on the far side of the field - pick 6.
We out gained them 430+ to 218. We dominated the game in just about every phase except the score board (28-17) and turn overs (4-0).

once saw a playoff team that my hometown high school won....the kid for the visiting team was leading a 2 minute drill with us up 14-7. Under a minute to play and a third down play gets the visitors inside our redzone but is about 2-3 yards short of the first down. The clock keeps winding. The QB hurries his team up to the line and spikes the ball.....on fourth down. I was 11 at the time and for the last 12 years I have never been able to shake how heart broken that kid must of been. Even then the pain on his face made a big impact on me at 11.

I have seen some crazy endings in the last few years.
1. School I went to was on the road in the playoffs at a school that hadn't lost a home playoff game in like 6 years. Long road trip, we return the opening kickoff for a TD, game settles in and we lead 21-14 with about 2 minutes left. Other team is a wishbone team, so they don't have the greatest 2 minute offense. They start driving, QB throws a pass on 3rd down that is short of the 1st down by maybe 2 yards. He rushes the team to the line on 4th down, and spikes the ball. He looks to their coach for the next play, and the entire sideline just has their hands up, the QB realizes what he did and falls down on the field.
2. The next year in the playoffs, the school I went to is playing a team that is always 1-2 with the them in the running to make state. My school falls behind 21-0, battles back to 28-21 late in the game. Score a TD with about 2 minutes left to make it 28-27, everybody is thinking no problem, we make the extra point and go to OT for the 2nd time in 2 years with this team. Center snaps the ball on the ground, holder picks it up and tries to throw it in for 2, gets tackled, lost 28-27.
3. Not really the reason we lost, but was the reason we never got into the game. Yesterday the school I went to is in the state championship against a team that has now won 3 in a row and 5 of the last 7. We return the opening kick for a TD, they answer back with 21 straight to end the half. They get the kick to start the 2nd half, we hold them, drive down the field. 2nd and goal from the 1, QB and FB don't mesh well on the handoff, other team picks up the fumble and return it 99 yards for a TD. 14 point swing that we couldn't overcome.

Worst way I've ever seen? Watched a freshman QB take a knee to run out the clock after the defense had a goal line stand at the 2 yard line to win the game. The problem? He had never taken a knee before. So he took the snap, backed up a few steps and took a knee ... In the end zone. For a safety. That was hard to watch.
