I'm not a HC. I just clicked n "0" so I can see my own poll.
According to Poll results there are three people who voted that had NO experience before becoming a HS HC.
How does that happen?
I have saw coaches who played in league, get 1 in 1 year coaching experience or even just certified.

That was OP. That's why I said three, not four (there are four votes for '0 or Youth ball').
CORRECTION: Now five.

I don't know why anyone would want to be a Head Coach. After my first year of being a HC, I was right there with you in this line of thinking. We took a team that had graduated 17 seniors from a semifinal squad, turned over the entire staff besides myself (lost 7 of 8 coaches from the semi team-retired) where I was the only one on staff with more than 2 years coaching experience- 2 of 4 had never coached- and made the playoffs. I thought we did a really good job. Apparently I was wrong. Got fired and decided I never really wanted to be a HC ever again. Then, I worked for two really, really bad HCs and just couldn't stand doing things wrong for the wrong reasons. Did spend one year as an asst for good HC, but decided that I just couldn't spend my life mentally killing myself over a product that I only had control over 1 aspect. I guess being an asst didn't appeal to my controlling side after having a taste of the header title. I certainly agree that I don't know why anyone would want to be a HC of a big time program where you do more paperwork and back slapping than actual coaching. I'm at a 1/2A school where I'm still the OC and OL coach and the scout team guy for our defense. There is no way I could give up being a position coach just to be the HC. I would want no part of a gig like that.

It's been 36 years for me and I'm still an assistant. Of course, I decided at least 20 years ago that I didn't want to be a HC because I like my job and where I work.
You know where I REALLY don't want to work? Those places where they hire a HC with zero years of experience.

5 years; 1 as a freshman coach, then 4 as a varsity assistant/offensive coordinator. 6 years as an HC now.

Four years as an assistant (high school). Was unpaid 1st year. Ran freshmen team, have been a head coach for 10 years was no where near ready year one, stepped into a great situation and have made it a great run.
