Does anybody else HATE equipment hand out day as much as I do! I would rather slit my wrist than hand out equipment!

Yes. I hate it because I am the assistant head coach and run everything when the boss isn't there. This happens a lot since I'm the only coach in the building. I also do everything he wants nothing to do with. Distribute equipment, collect equipment, inventory equipment, and shake kids down for their equipment or money when they fail to turn in equipment.
F that noise. That said, the HC is a great guy and I really don't want to coach under anybody else.

I actually don't mind it. I might be in the minority but I can tolerate it.

One of the best things we did was to put the trainers in charge of fitting all helmets and shoulder pads. Safer and easier for us as a staff. We do not use practice pants, just integrated girdles. So, we have no thigh, knee and hip pads to give out. We use wrestling/volleyball knee pads with shorts for practice along with the integrated girdles.. Makes it a lot easier. For games we just put a big barrel of knee pads out and they get a pair. Then they just throw them back in after the game.

I think it would cut down on laundry and overall "team stink" haha. Did you have any resistance from your athletic training staff or from anybody at all? Want to try this but fear that my over enthusiastic trainer might make a stink of it..

I hate it. But one of the things we do is start early and hand a little out each day in segments.

I hate it. But one of the things we do is start early and hand a little out each day in segments. This is what we always did. Helmets to seniors and juniors one day, then the rest the next day. Shoulder pads the next week. Doesn't everyone have a crazy old guy that volunteers to help hand out equipment? Rooster

Coach I have done it for about 5-6 years now with no complaints, no injuries, not disdain or concerns from Trainers, etc. It is hands down one of the best things we have done over many years as a HC. Less laundry, the kids love feeling "light" everyday. We let them keep kneepads down unless we are doing any group or team sessions

I agree. We got the idea from Arizona State and I figured if 6-5 275lb guys can do it that run that fast, than a HS can do it. We've done it for four years now and its been outstanding. The knee pads are on their ankles for all skill work, and then they pull them up for contact drills. I think they are safer than the crappy practice pants we used to use.

I agree, no doubt the knee pads are more protective than traditional knee pads. I would never, ever, ever go back to practice pants.

All of our gear has a number on it. As the boys check out their gear we record the number on a spreadsheet with the athletes name and info on it, grade, phone number, student ID, ETC. At the end of the season the boys put their gear in their travel bag and drop it off at the equipment office. As the equipment guy opens a bag he inventories the gear. If an athlete turns all his gear in the spreadsheet is erased/cleared, if he doesnt turn all his gear in an invoice gets sent to the front office for billing. The equipment guy separates it all for reconditioning as he checks gear back in.

We've always used Adams knee pads. We buy about 20% smalls, 40% mediums and 40% larges.

I'll trade an equipment hand out day, for picture day in a skinny minute.

Some are going on their fourth season. I include them in their spirit pack their sophomore year and have them keep them for 3 seasons, so they take care of them better.
