PS never wear flip flops or a damn visor even coaching in Florida. I do have a big Panama Hat though. I remember when I wore Flippy floppies and visors..... Oh wait, I'm a football coach, not a softball coach! Really don't understand visors. They only have the bill which covers the forehead and that isn't helping, especially guys that wear em and have bald spots.

Maybe you didn't get the memo because you are a defensive guy. Flip flops are out this year. We are going with bright pastel colored light shoes and no socks. Also, the new line of visors comes with the Oakleys already attached so you don't have to buy a pair to keep up there at all times. Get with the program coach. I guess I know what I'm wearing to the Pride Parade this year. Pride Parade. Nice. I was just sitting here trying to figure out what I was going to call my new, whiz bang, RPO, package play that is un-defendable. The hand signal for this might be a little awkward.

My old OC/QB guy wore the crazy color sneakers with those socks you get when you try on shoes at the outlet mall. We bagged on him daily but he loves some menswear.
I hate the dudes at clinics. Phone calls during sessions, late but walk to the very front, taking pictures 2 min after they say no pictures. I could go on all day.

I once called someone a spread-offense, popped collar, visor-wearing, metrosexual douchebag. He also had a flavour saver. He didn't argue with me.

I just go to clinics to drink beer and not attend any speakers. Not true. But some people do this. Oh I didn't know you were a member of my previous staff that I $hit canned Settle down guys. Our staff goes to the clinic's to get sh!tty and have some fun. When everyday is a football clinic for me I don't feel the need to act all clinicy when at the clinic. The bonds made over a 2 night bender are awesome. The rest of the days of the week we get plenty of football done.

We just attended a clinic at an SEC school this weekend and one of the keynote speakers was a very prevalent Big 12 HC. Putting it politely, he was awful. The first 15 minutes or so were ok, he talked about his background and all that. But he talked over practice schedule, special teams, and some offensive drill they did. He took the stage in shorts and a long sleeve athletic shirt so he didn't make a great first impression from the get-go. Then he has no idea what's on his presentation and constantly has to ask his GA questions, who is sitting toward the back of the room so the HC can't even hear his answers. It was a joke! I get it, these guys live a hectic life and don't have much downtime.. but if you get invited to be a keynote speaker, at least look over your presentation know what you're going to talk about. Some of the drill film was from last year and the practice schedule slide weren't even in order. He even admitted that it was his first time seeing the slide show. Also, during the last half of his presentation there is a LARGE group of coaches congregated around the booze making a pretty loud roar. I get it, he was bad and you don't want to listen but at least be respectful enough to wait until he's done. I was at the same Clinic. I agree completely. The keynote was so unprepared...and I was looking forward to hearing what he had to say. What I was ashamed of was, like you said, the massive group in the back having a grand ol' time. I get it, you're bored as hell and this guy is horrible right now, but have a little respect anyways. I was shocked to say the least.

I know from past experience depending on the clinic, like the Nike COY most of those keynotes are contractually obligated to speak at x number of the clinics by Nike. I know guys who have worked the clinic who have literally picked up keynote speakers at the airport two hours before they spoke and drove them back to the airport an hour after they were done speaking so they could get back home.

Not just keynote, but at so many clinics, it is very apparent they have no interest in sharing anything. I know a particular well known HS coach who literally explained his philosophy 3 years straight in the exact same clinic. Then I would ask who thinks that is a good presentation and why are they brought back? and if they have a contract, why is it renewed.

I think with the coaches becoming obsessed with selfie's and autographs and getting googly-eyed over others is embarassing. I know I coach with one and at times he goes off the rocker. Other coaches look at me to control him, I say handle it yourself. I will never understand so I just laugh.
These coaches remind me of some parents today. I love to people watch. I rarely go out. I have a buddy who drags me to a local place several weeks ago and a gal comes up to him and is all over him. She used to help with game nights. Another lady with her comes over and I ask "who's your sister?" It was her mom. I see these mom's and dad's wanting to act like kids all over again. In public and in school. I mean I was in a school meeting for a student when their mom walks in and I think my supervisor looked at me and was like WTF. Mom has got some mountains and is wearing a see-through top threw the halls during class change for the meeting. Comes over and gives me a hug and everyone's jaw is on the floor. The daughter walks in and what she is wearing is borderline illegal. They go to tell people they are going out tonight. I am speechless. These parents fail to lead by example, post on their kids social media, hang out or throw parties with their kids and its a trickle down effect. Everyone mentioned at these clinics is attention hungry meeting pictures, videos, memorabilia is not about the value to them but they value to show everyone is the world on bookface, instaphoto, tweeter, etc.

As a coach you are not only responsible for your players, but your coaches as well. Even if you are not the HC you have a responsibility to make sure individuals are representing the program and themselves in a professional manner. We have strict guidelines on what to where, where to sit, how to approach, etc. for all of our coaches at football related activities and not. Professional conduct is needed always.

About half the speakers who were excellent I have heard dress like they don't give a flip about what you think about them.
David Yost and Noel Mazzone were some of the best X and O guys I have ever heard. Yost had a head band on and flip flops. Mazzone was in sweats with chew all over his face. He didn't have or even run his presentation. Had a GA doing it and he just had the GA pulling up parts of his playbook. He was fantastic. I enjoyed just watching his brain work.
Yost had tons of plays and was just vomiting golden X and Os. He had an answer for every scenario and had all the whys for everything.
It would have been real easy to judge a book by its cover. Yost simplified how I looked at everything and did so much for me as a coach.
I have also heard guys like Tressel Pinkel Bowden who were dressed professionally and acted the part. They were all great, but they are CEOs.
Some of these other guys like Mazzone and Yost are like artists in my opinion. They see the world differently. There are some really good Cali HS and Juco coaches who walk around in Hawaiian shirts or Murphy who looks like they guy picking fights at the bar with straight bill and fitted tees. They have great info. I don't care what these guys look like as long as they can help me get better.
My boss who used to be a college coach always say you can tell all the guys who are really happy and secure in the job they have and they guys who are out of work or looking by the way they dress at clinics especially some of the big ones where you could network.
Happy and secure-sweats and team jump suits Looking-dressed like they want to make impressions on people.
Hell I wear a shirt and tie everyday but at 2:30 or at a clinic I'm getting comfortable.

Two things... without reading all the comments, I'm going to guess they were being lazy and taking pictures of the powerpoint. As a teacher, I'm finding that occur more and more. It's laziness to me.
The running up on him when finished is really immature. It shows how our profession has weakened a little since I began in '99 and I'm sure since some of you have started even further than that...

The GA running stuff for Mazzone was more than likely David Marsh. That guy is as sharp as a tack. I love when Noel busts his balls too. I agree, those guys don't "dress to impress" but they have such a handle on their knowledge that it's impressive in and of itself.

i've seen enough coaches dress to impress, i've heard enough philosophy speeches to last a lifetime, when i go to a clinic i don't give a crap on what you wear as a speaker or listener, patterson gave a great clinic the last time i saw him, cussing every couple words, making fun of his wife or ex wife, but covered some good stuff on defense, probably one of the best defensive clinics i have been too in 22 years and funny as hell

Wow!!! Three pages. Good stuff guys.
To the last few posts. I think it's important to know your surroundings. Understand the Environment. If there is a "MAJOR SPEAKER" he sets the tone. I too could care less what he wears. I just want him to provide good info and I want everyone there to act like they are coaches, not fans. There is a big difference in a room with 350 people in it and a storage closet with a few desks and a grease board. My favorite is truly when they ask "What do you guys want to talk about"? If they do that I plan on being in there for 4 hours.

I was at a Glazier clinic this year, & a coach starts telling the story about Frank pulling a coach off stage back in the 80's. Well I get hysterical laughing & the coach looks over, I tell him which coach it was. I was at the same clinic. Years ago, I was a clinic junkie writing everything down complying notebooks. Today it's much more about picking my spots, & wanting to hear a specific topic. I will usually sit in the back so I can slip out quietly at a break if it's useless. Of course I will go when one of our staff speaks, I usually keep the heckling to a minimum. Joe Our HC had to speak a clinic this year. He asked the staff if we were coming. I asked "what are you talking about?" He said "power" I said "no, you can't run that chit on us anyway" He said "good point" Haha. I love clinics though. As an older coach, you know you make friends over the years and really you only see each other at things like clinics and such. Always a good time to have a few beers and tell some player/football/coaching stories. Bring up the past a bit here: I saw part of that talk at the local high clinic coach did. It's good, but nothing majorly different than how we run IZ/OZ/Power. Also as he points out, the guy toting the rock is really good too.

and then there's the guy that A) doesn't know how to turn his cell phone on vibrate, so it rings during the clinic 2) let's it ring 5 or 6 times trying to figure out how to get it to stop iii) TAKES THE CALL IN THE CLINIC WITHOUT GETTING UP AND LEAVING THE ROOM!!!This happened at a clinic I was at in Pittsburgh this weekend. I was feverishly writing down notes. I couldn't hear everything as the ring tone was going off loudly. I rarely cuss in front of strangers or publicly, but it pissed me off to no end. The person was about 10 feet away from me. In a tone, audible enough to be heard by nearly everyone around me I said, "Man what the Fck?!" When I looked up...it was the coaches wife. The ensuing feeling was akin to having hot water poured over my head. Red-faced, I went back to writing down some obscure notes of (which made no sense). I don't know if she was just preoccupied with the phone, but she never looked at me. I might have used my ink pen to jab away at my corroded artery if she had. A guy sitting behind me, nearly bounced off of the bleachers trying to muffle his laughter. He must have nearly died as he was in tears and snorted three times. I wanted to shrink and disappear. It's funny as hell to me now.

I dated a girl that went to HS with him and the playmate so that's how I know. Still just in random conversation it would come up about different people that were famous. The cool thing was it was never bragging or anything. It was just like "yeah we went to school together" Small world.

I was at the 'Bama Clinic a few weeks ago. After Nick Saban finished talking he had a line of 50+ people up one of the bleacher rows standing there trying to take selfies and get autographs. I thought that was a little strange...until I saw Tom Moore sitting right next to the front of the line, with absolutely NOBODY wanting his picture, autograph, or even talking to him. I don't think anybody in the line even recognized him!
I went over and got his autograph just because the whole picture was really weirding me out, and I needed to restore balance to the universe. Call that weird if you want, but if 50+ people want Nick Saban's autograph, at least one person should be asking for Tom Moore's...right?

The autograph thing baffles me. Early in my career, when I was young and dumb enough to be star struck, I heard some of the greatest coaches in history and asking for an autograph never entered my mind. I don't remember lines of other guys asking either.

Tom Moore has to be closing in on 80? and he is at a clinic, in the front row? that would be a clinic all by itself. It is a shame nobody recognized the opportunity.
