I usually just said our Head Coach doesn't know anything. Nor do any of our coaches. We really just wing it from day to day, game to game and it seems to work for us. Oh wait, they don't ask assistants questions around here, nor should they. I have zero desire to talk to the media.

What do you guys do if the paper kind of calls out a kid? We had a paper call a kid an underachiever one week because they game before he didn't have a breakout type game. That really upset the kid because he had a ton of pressure on him from many outside sources and was worried it would hurt his recruiting (he went D1 so it was a legitimate concern in his eyes). I didn't go Mike Gundy on the reporter but the game after he called the kid an underachiever the kid rushed for 270. I asked the reporter if he was going to say sorry to the kid.
I hate reporters...sorry for the side-tracking of thread.

It's not so much reporters. It's the people fishing for something. And it doesn't even have to be malicious fishing. People might genuinely be curious.
I feel like they only see the scoreboard and have no idea that in January these kids started this trek. They'll only judge the scoreboard and not grasp what has happened along the way.
They can bitch about the X's and O's, but do they know that the star RB is so broke that boosters had to help pay for his cleats? Or the back up D lineman is homeless...and still makes every practice?
The surface scratching they do is nothing compared to what we know happens inside the program. Therefore...the guard is up.

Few years ago we played and beat a team in Week 1 that would go on to win a state championship. We had a big injury during the game, it got delayed 45 mins as they tried to get him off the field, it was 103 as we were playing on a Saturday afternoon and we ended up being on the field for 4 hours plus. Our TB had 200+ yds rushing, over 15 tackles as a safety and was just phenomenal. At the end of the game, I'm done. Baked. On empty. Newspaper guy comes up and asks me "What were your keys to victory today coach?" My reply- "It really helped when Steve got on the fu**ing bus this morning."
Ended the interview.

I always had fun with reporters. I would say {censored} just to see if it would make it to the paper. Now the Superintendent came to see me when I said our state-semi game would come down like "it was nut-cutting time". He understood what it meant, but told me to tone it down a little.

Assistant coaches don't need to be saying anything to anyone that the head coach has not given the ok about. I hate it when assistant coaches think that somehow they are supposed to be out in the community playing "insider". As a head coach, I'm not going to lie, but how much truth I let out is up to me.

I say things in the media as another way of sending messages to my team. I don't say anything to community members that isn't general and positive.

When speaking about the inner workings of a program, I think any intelligent person can observe how the team works and know what is going on. Watch how coaches and players interact and you can a good clue.
On sharing scheme things, I once was told by a HOF coach to always share what you know and do to improve the game. He also pointed out that it forces you as a program to keep improving. I figure that as long as you are 1 year ahead of the competition, you are in good shape.
As far as reporters, I'll share a comment on another thread. I used to be very tight lipped and said little. I then once had a sports psychiatrist tell me that I wasn't fulfilling all of my players needs by not talking about them enough in the press.(He spoke at a Glazier Clinic.)
I since have realized that they are just trying to do their job and are not the enemy. I will ask them to rephrase a question or ask a different one if I think they ask something stupid. I still don't talk about specific players but I will talk about position groups and units.
