I had to share this story. We're heading into week 3. We've got a chance to be pretty good this year. Returning almost all our skill guys on Offense, but lost 4/5 OL. We return most of our Defense; 2/3 DL, 3/3 LBs, 4/5 DBs. We mainly had to fill in depth wise with upcoming JV kids.
Our returning MLB isn't anything but a Mike, in fact we sub him out and slide our SLB there on obvious passing situations. In fact our MLB mainly ran with the 2s during the passing league circuit for a couple of reasons; he knew the stuff we run and could get things called and get everyone lined up, he's a program guy and does everything we ask and more, and we have a really good sophomore LB that pretty much showed from the first day of spring he needed to play. Circumstances further highlighted this Soph kid when our WLB fractured his leg in our first scrimmage and we got better when he came off the bench.
Fast forward to the marathon game last week. The MLB had volunteered to speak in our pregame meal/pregame meetings - it's 'a what makes me tick' thing seniors do to open up to the underclass men and share about themselves. He talks about the usual: I moved here in 3rd grade and had Mrs. Smith's class with Bobby, remember when Jimmy, Joe, and Bubba and I played little league together, I look up to my older brother and always wanted to play LB to be like him, etc.... He went on to be very poignant. He talked about how he knows he isn't the most physically gifted player, but he just wants to do his part to 'get the team to state', he loves being on the team, and wants everyone to work hard and care about each other.
Come Sunday during our staff meeting as we are going over team issues, concerns, etc. the HC/DC tells the staff our MLB and he had had a conversation and volunteered to move to the OL to help shore the hardest hit unit from graduation. Sure enough on Monday he had on the other colored jersey and was standing right beside the OL coach asking all kinds of questions and getting as many reps as he could.
Sometimes the coaching comes from the guys not wearing the whistles.
