Right- what's the rationale? I don't really want to come off as bad mouthing the HC, because thats not what I'm here to do, but its basically the premise that if one is good then two must be better. So why not practice more? When you get to the playoffs the rule is "Don't change anything". Learned that the hard way.

I'm with Silk.... cancel thursday practice and do a walk through friday since you play on saturday....
Just another thought for the old HC..... if you do carry out this plan to go for four hours on thanksgiving day... does this game then become a game where win and you are a possible genius or lose and you are the stupidest coach to ever take his team that deep in the playoffs... just a thought.

I disagree. If you practice at 8 AM the kids aren't missing anything at home. They probably wouldn't even be out of bed by the time you end a normal two hour practice (As opposed to a four hour nightmare). Secondly, this may sound sacreligious but I've always found Thanksgiving morning to be one of the most stressful days of the year. If your Mom is like Mom, it alternates between, "Get out of the kitchen. Give me room", to, "Am I gonna have to do this alone?". You're doing the kids a favor getting them out of the house.

When we practice on thanksgiving we don't do it at 8am, but it's at noon or 1pm, so people are home by 5 at the very latest. It's always a big hit. It also helps that it's the first practice coming out of the bye week.

Our schedule for tomorrow... 4th time in five years we practiced on thanksgiving...
players report 7:30 AM - Review practice film
On Field - Helmets (Our game is friday) ... 8:15
Off Field around 9:40 ish...
Have 150 hash browns, 300 egg mcmuffin, sausage mcmuffin and sausage biscuits sandwiches for the players after.. Everyone should be on their way home by 10:00 AM or so...
4 hours sounds like overkill this time of year..

You need to Forget the fact that it's Thanksgiving. You're lucky to be in a game this weekend as it's probably a semi-final. Though Practice should be your normal Thursday practice for a Saturday game. Having, said that, any practice that goes longer than 2 1/2 hours is trouble. You'll lose the kids attention, drills, team, indo will turn to a pile of schitt, and the staff, and anyone else that's involved with your program will be hating life at that point. No way you can keep intesity and physicality for 4 hours. That really sounds asinine to me. I've had to shorten practices to an hour and ran everyone off the field for draggin @$$ and practicing like crap. I can see a 4 hour practice turning to crap and it WILL be detrimental to your game. Even if only mentally. I'll be interested to see if the HC follows through on this and then how your team plays this weekend. Good luck.

And yes mental drag is something we've had all year

Our practice today 9 we were off the field and in the lockeroom 9:59
For mental fatigue, we lift Monday and Wednesday mornings and Saturdays before film. We have given them Wednesday off 3 times this year and 1 Saturday off after first round knowing that we wouldn't even get the trade tape till late Saturday morning because of the other team getting in mega late.
Little things like this has seemed To keep us fresh .

At this point in the season, 4 hours of practice in one day is absolutely unnecessary. At this time of year (really from late October onward) we only have two practices per week that are even a full 2-hours (we go 3:30-5:30 Tue and Wed). Less is more. You're a good team already, that's what got you here. Not only do you risk pissing everyone off (coaches, coach's families, players, parents), but you also risk completely cooking the kids mentally and physically. You hit the hail on the head! We platoon and seldom go over 2 hrs throughout the season. Less IS more!

Ah well, Canadian thanksgiving us more of an evening affair. Since we usually practice from 6-8, this constitutes a very early practice for us.

When we had T-day practices we practiced an hour and then spent an hour having everyone at the practice stand up and tell everybody what they were/are thankful for. Kids and coaches shedding tears. Real emotion out there. Great stuff.

I worked for a head coach who would regularly have multiple 4 hour practices each week. All others were at least 3 hours, even Thursday. We went 0-10. Players were dead by game day. I left after 1 year. Everyone hated him, Players, Parents, Coaches, Coaches' Families. He lost all staff but 1 (his best friend), half of his players did not return the next year, and over half of the 8th grade team did not come out as freshmen. It didn't help that he was a jerk who thought he knew more than he really did, and bullied the players.
