Guys,
Now that it's clinic season, and we're all busy watching Coach's Choice videos and going to clinics to get better, have you perhaps noticed a certain type of speaker? I'm talking about the guys who use the word "football" unnecessarily frequently when they are giving their presentations:
"Coach, if you get that man blocked, you have a great FOOTBALL play right there."
(as opposed to a basketball play...? Gotcha coach!)
"We like to divide up the FOOTBALL field into zones."
(Thank God! I thought it was a baseball field)
"You move that guy over there, and that's a tough little FOOTBALL formation to defend, men."
(I thought I was looking at alphabet soup...that's a "football" formation??)
"We think that Blue Coverage is a great FOOTBALL coverage for this scenario in the FOOTBALL game"
"This guy right here playing your Mosquito Backer position needs to be a heckuva FOOTBALL player, coaches."
Just me? Useless thread of the week award? Discuss...

That's funny I was telling my wife the same thing when we were watching a game last week on tv. Nobody on tv ever refers to the "ball" either, it's always "football" like there's going to be some confusion.

I've actually heard this sentence from a D3 coach the last clinic I went to.
"He's just a good football player, in a good football position, to get to the football."
I had to write it down and read it several times to figure out what sport we were talking about

This kills me, though not as much as the NFL guys always being like, "Well, this is one of the great players in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, coached by one of the great coaches in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. That formation right there is very popular in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, but in order to win in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE you have to run the ball and stop the run. ... Oh, that was a great play. Jones is one of the best wide receivers in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE..." and on and on and on.

I'm not a really a Cusser but I thoroughly enjoy the guys that just don't care who's around. Mostly the Oline guys....or almost any Air Raid guy. I hear an F Bomb, I'm zoned in at that point.

If we are out on the practice field, games, weightroom around the kids? Sure, obviously. Just us? Hell no. Do not.
When I hear somebody at a clinic or anywhere overusing "Coach", I think I'm going to turn around and see the throwback guy. You know the ones:
-Trucker/Mesh Hat
-Bike shorts that are so tight and pulled up so high that they are splitting his sack
-Knee high socks
-Spot Bilt shoes
-A chew so big in is mouth that he can't shut his mouth if he tried
I've got buddies of mine who will TRY and do that when talking to me in person & I'm like, "WTF?!". You've known me long before I was "Coach", so don't start that crap.

I have given up now but I have told some kids before that I ACTUALLY have a name rather than just Coach. You don't call your other teachers Mister or Miss now do you? It's not like I just call my students "Hey kid/student/gym rat/etc" instead of their name. Not to mention that whenever they say coach, at least 5 of us turn around in PE class. However, I've gotten soft I guess and now don't care what they call me as long as it's not profanity. |

It's coach!" Or open the window of the room and scream "Hey coach it's coach! Coach said grab coach and come have some beers in the room with coach and coach!" It's amazing how many heads turn and think you are talking to them. I think some guys get pi$$ed like it's an insult, so every year we try and do it more than before. Never gets old... |

I feel like if I did that as a kid, my dad would beat my (Fill in the blank) and then force my teacher/coach to do the same thing in front of the class. Funny side story, but during practice one of our assistant coaches signaled in the wrong play from the sidelines. OC kind of got annoyed but we kept going. Then of course one of the WRs tries to be funny and says to the other coach "C'mon Kurt, get it together!" Let's just say by the time I met with the staff after practice and was heading out, that one player was still out there and my buddy still was fired up. The whole staff got a kick out of it |

I've always told my guys that the moment they graduate, they can call me by my first name. And that I will friend them on Facebook.
I hate being called coach by my friends, because I'm not their coach.
I've always felt that the people who use phrases like "football player" or a "football play" are just lacking the ability to fully and correctly describe the person or play. So, they think by claiming it's a "football" something, that it develops this myth and ability and that non-football mortals would never understand. I think it's lazy in the same way that I think "hit somebody" is lazy coaching.

And then you get "breaks from left to right". Which technically isn't correct - from left is a relative direction, so left of what? It breaks to the right, but what left is it coming from?
