How smart is your team, or not smart? Serious question not like they don't know anything about football type intelligence. If you get grade reports how many kids are failing one or even more classes? IEPs? Etc....

A full 1/3 of my team is on IEPs. Our football knowledge is decent in practice but it’s like we forget everything once we get into a game. A great example is last Friday we squibbed a kickoff and had a chance to fall on it but my guys ran right to the ball, stood there for a split second, and watched the other team recover it. My head about exploded. None of my kids even watch football and that is my biggest problem.

4.1 in the classroom. 1.4 on the field.

I have an offensive guard that will tackle the DL with perfect form. If I don't tell him, block good; tackle bad. Before the offense runs out on the field.
He might be the lowest kid I've ever coached. And I've wrote R&L on a lot of hands, so they'd know their right and left.

I've had guys who could barely read but if they did read something it was the scouting report. Others, though, were intelligent but football wasn't that important to them. There are limits. The HC once had me teach a DT the plays so that he could help out a guard. At an OL meeting going over blocking assignments I asked him what the right guard did. He asked me which one was the right guard. End of experiment.

Fantom, I have some great ones to add on that stack. I had a kid ask what a sack was. I had a kid ask what forward progress what. My all time favorite though is I had a kid once who didn’t know the difference between offense and defense so he was blocking people at DT. Great kid! Dumb as a box of rocks but it made for some fun memories for the guys at least.

Football intelligence is borderline nonexistent
Classroom is a mix of AP kids, IEP kids, and kids that just don't try. We just got grade reports and only had one varsity player ineligible and he was on the fringe. Our 9/10 teams have like six guys ineligible between them. This is out of a program of about 100 kids.

It's all relative to the individual kid. We have a few IEP kids that pick up on everything in a hurry. On the flip side of the coin, we have a tackle with a 3.9 GPA that thinks Gap/Down/Backer means he will chip a 3 tech and then look for a LB. We're well over a month into the season, we've chalked, talked and repped the rules but we still see him doing this on film.

We often joke that some of our guys can’t READ, but they CAN read a down block or a pull. Legit had a kid score like 600 or close to that on the SAT...like total score and not just a section. At best he was at the 3rd grade level. Tell you what though, he sure could read the type of block the TE he aligned on gave him every single snap!!!
