My kid is a senior. Team is 4-4. Need a win tonight against a good team to go 5-4 and make the playoffs. It's possible but we will have to play our best.
Anyway...my kid has been a 4-year varsity starter. Of the 42 varsity games our program will have played since 2016, he will have played in 41 of those games and has started 37 of them. It's been a great ride and we have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of it.
I'm also an unapologetic metalhead and the song "Invincible" by TOOL makes me think alot about my son's high school football career. He's a warrior in every sense of the word and this might be his last battle on the football field. We hope it isn't...
TOOL - Invincible Long in tooth and soul
Longing for another win
Lurch into the fray
Weapon out and belly in
Warrior struggling
To remain consequential
Bellow aloud
Bold and proud
Of where I've been
But here I am
Beating chest and drums
Beating tired bones again
Age-old battle, mine
Weapon out and belly in
Tales told of battles won
Of things we've done
Caligula would grin
Beating tired bones
Tripping through remember when
Once invincible
Now the armor's wearing thin
Heavy shield down
Warrior struggling
To remain relevant
Warrior struggling
To remain consequential
Cry aloud
Bold and proud
Of where I've been
But here I am
Where I end
Warrior struggling
To remain relevant
Warrior struggling
To remain consequential
Tears in my eyes
Chasing Ponce de Leon's phantom
So filled with hope
I can taste mythical fountains
False hope, perhaps
But the truth never got in my way
Before now, feel the sting
Feeling time bearing down

Tough loss. 22-20. Boys fought hard. Hard to see it end but no regrets!

I was fortunate to be able to coach both of my sons through their HS playing days. Both were 4 year guys like your son. It is something to be able to be out there and enjoy their ups, and be there for their lows as well as a dad. I never really got emotional about either one, until my youngest sons senior night. We walked him out and "The Boys of Fall" was playing. Man that hit me hard, and still does to this day.

You're my spirit match Delta. My kid is a senior. We both listen to metal. I saw Tool play that song live a few weeks ago.
My son's playoff game is this Friday. I'm not optimistic about how the result will go. My son is a lyric listener as well.
With my son and I have seen these bands live this year.
Tool, Gojira (twice), Volbeat, Slipknot, Korn (twice), Alice in Chains, Fever 333, Behemoth, Babymetal, etc.
I'm seeing Slayer 3 days before their last show ever.

I was going to take my kid to see Iron Maiden in Chicago back in August. But the concert was on a Thursday night. What kind of crap is that? Who the hell goes to a heavy metal concert on a Thursday night?

Okay...I'm taking both my sons to see Tool again. One saw them with me earlier.
Here is the clincher. It's 3+ hours away on a school night!!! But even more clutch...it's on the first night of FINALS!!!
It's going to be epic.

Update. Saw Tool last night. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. It's a different experience. More a performance than what you expect a concert to be.

Agreed. They don't move around that much. Which is fine. They don't let you record anything. Which is fine.
They just kick ass. Sort of a Pink Floydian experience. Took my sons with me. They shared my sentiment of Tool's basassery.

They shared my sentiment of Tool's basassery. I don't understand the recording thing at concerts. I saw Metallica at Soldier Field in 2018. They played about a 2.5 hour set and there were people who had their phones out recording for the entire concert. Who's going to watch that? What are they going to do with the video? I mean, it's fvcking Metallica! Arguably the greatest heavy metal band ever! Put down your damned phone and behold greatness!

I like Metallica, particularly the pre Black album stuff, but my God are they trying to out Kiss Kiss.

I'm a video and picture taker at concerts. But.... Just to chronicle the experience. I don't film the whole time. I take about 5 pictures. Then I soak it in.
I'll admit, not seeing cameras out at Tool was refreshing AND you could see people getting more into because they had to be engaged with the band instead of their phone.

I like Metallica, particularly the pre Black album stuff, but my God are they trying to out Kiss Kiss. I lost touch with them after the Black Album. But I reconnected with "Death Magnetic". "All Nightmare Long" is a great song and the new album is really good, except for the fact that I can't listen to it at school when I'm lifting because of all the F-bombs. But a really good album. But anything from that period 1991-2008, I really am in the dark. I don't think I know any of their stuff from that time period.

I took a couple pictures, too. I'm talking about those people who are literally watching the concert through their cellphone. WTF?

Exactly. Hate that.
I need to chronicle the events. I remember hitting concerts as a teenager, but don't have any physical memories.
Now I can say I saw all these bands and have proof.
