coachpassion, A lot of Head Varsity Coaches will tell a young guy that he can coach JV, just to see how bad he wants to coach. Coaching is coaching doesnt matter about Pee wee, JV, Varsity, College or Pro. If you do a good job and he thinks you can help him win. You will be on the varsity!

depends on who you know..nothing more. If I could paraphrase.... HC right now. Three previous opportunties at different schools as an assistant where I would have had a realistic opportunity to be the next HC. Each time considered it but didn't for some reason. Thank God I didn't. The reward of being an asst. coach is getting to learn. Especially if the person running the program is good at what they do. If you have had some good experiences already watching somebody else install schemes, deal with parents and players, game plan etc etc etc than you are probably ready. If you haven't, your opportunity to learn may be around the corner as an asst under a fantastic HC.

Maybe I'm way out in left field here, but whats wrong with being a assistant coach? I'm sure it would be easier for you to find a quality program (with a quality head man) that is looking for an OC or DC. That way you are building your resume my learning and gaining experience. Maybe its just me but there is no way that I would want all that piled on me at this point in my coaching career. Two years ago (I was 22)I wanted it but with two years of coaching under my belt now I see that my best bet might be to work under good people that have been around for awhile. Learn from there mistakes and from the good things you do. Plus following on someones coatails as they climb the ladder is sometimes the best bet for future opportunities. Assitant coaches that have been with successful organizations seem to get hired quicker then head coaches that have been with weaker teams. Just my two cents, but then again what do I know, I use "eh" in a third of my sentences.

I'm 25, and will be going into my 3rd year as an assisstant on the varsity level. I am also the Jr. High DC and Co-DC of the varsity. I, in no way feel like I am ready to be a head coach. Before I got out of college I thought I was ready and could handle it, but once I started coaching I realized there is so much involved that you do not even think about. Maybe when Im 30 Ill start applying to the smaller schools in the area. But even then, I will reflect and make a decision. Besides the fact that I am getting to learn under an older 3x state championship coach. As long as he's around as head coach, Im pretty sure I'll be tagging along picking up anything I can from him.
