I played in HS and one year of college…
My HS o line coach never played a down in his life…and is in the Michigan coaches hall of fame. He has also been asked to speak a couple of time at clinics. Everyone wants to know how he gets his line off the ball so fast…including me and I played for him. lol
I also am a fan of the old saying…”Those who can, do. Those who can’t, coach.” Not sure where I heard it…Now I am not saying that only bad players end up coaching, because I know there are some good coaches that were great players…all I am saying is that those players that were not able to continue on and have a love for the game make good coaches as well.

I know Bill Belichick of the Pats Played was a LAXER and didn't play football but I think his dad was a coach for the US Naval Academy for years... Belichick was a Center for Weslyan...He wasn't very good, however.

Never played college ball and only played one year of high school...for a variety of reasons. Coached a couple of years of youth football and played WR in a competitive flag football league where I learned a lot from guys that had played college and even some pro. Was out of work and picked up a freshman coaching position at the age of 32. When through an alternative licensure program and am now teaching accounting (my major in college) and coaching varsity WR's and special teams for a 5A school in CO. I was assigned the special teams position before the end of season in 2004. I decided that it was unfair of me to ask these kids to do things that I had never experienced (ex., taking on two blocks as a wedge buster), so I started lifting hard and working out at a local Velocity and played 2 years of semi-pro as a Safety and OLB (age 35,36). I just finished up and learned some things that I could have never learned from reading a book, watching a video, or going to a clinic. I now have so much more respect for those of you who played the game and for my HS kids!

I personally don’t think the players you coach care about how good of a player you were in college, or even played in college. From my limited experience all they really care about is if you can help them improve as a player.
Coachld where do you coach in Colorado?

Being a college football player doesn't automatically qualify someone to be a football coach, and players just want someone who will help them to be successful. I didn't play college ball, but my kids don't care because I am totally committed to their success and they appreciate that.

The last Head Coach I worked for never played a down of football in his life. In the four years I worked for him we played for 3 state championships. In my third year we won the 3A Title. We moved up to 4A the next year and beat John Curtis for the 4A title.
Not bad for our guy that never played ball at all!!!
