I had a kid almost quit because he didn’t want to play FB...so we moved him to Center.
The next week he played like crap on D. Turns out he hated playing LB. So now he plays 3 tech.
I don’t know guys. High School football is weird.

Took a W 42-0 last night to move us to 1-2. I thought my team was in rough shape, but holy smokes. The JV team we played was young (about half/half 9th/10th graders). Offense was predicated on motioning all over the place Matt Canada style. Problem was they had too many illegal motions. Punter caught the punt twice and landed on his knee somehow giving us the ball on the 10.
Legit feel for those coaches.

Update: Got on the board last night. Down 2 scores in the 4th, we tied it up 12-12. Going for the win on 2, our fullback runs power instead of FB dive.
We stop them on the next series, and return the punt for a TD. Get called for a bogus block in the back, which offset with them holding. On re-kick, we block it at their 15. Our returner runs up into the trash to try to recover it 2 yards from the LOS, and they recover. They kill the clock, beat us in OT on a 2 point conversion.
Gotta stop shooting ourselves in the dick. Gave it away.

Positive: Held team under 50.
Negative: Press box wasn't high enough to cause a fatal fall just severe injuries so I stayed in my seat.
And a 1 hour 45 minute ride back on a cheese bus.

Assistant coaches have told players about how bad our next opponent looks on film.
We're winless.
This can't possibly blow up in our face, right?

we did that in week 2 when we were 0-1 facing a team that beat us last year 22-18. We ended up winning 76-0, they were legitimately one of the worst teams I have ever seen on person and film (lots of circumstances led to their demise). So maybe its worth a shot anyways?

Team we play next week had 4 guys on the sideline last game they played. I haven't told anyone I saw that yet. Our guys would find out and be the most over confidant win less team in the country, and then get beat I'm sure. I feel your pain.

Instead of film this week, we went over their offense using the scout cards on HUDL. Our opponents look bad and the film quality was dookie and I don't want my kids' over-inflated egos growing anymore. It's already homecoming week... AND senior night so they think they're on top of the world. Tried all week to prevent the fall... hope we don't crap the bed tonight.

I’m having a frustrating season as well.
I ran into one of my former parents from my previous school where I was an assistant. He’s an ex marine and currently a detective in the LAPD. I sang the blues to him about my season a bit and he told me “Tough times don’t last. Tough people do”
Definitely have had a different outlook on my season since.

The O ain’t the problem...he obviously defended facemelter offenses giving up 120! Probably also because he isn’t running the D like Belichik, Saban, Don Brown or whatever other D guru... He said they were averaging 6 points a game. Definitely because they run the Wing T. They should go to some pistol spread with an H back like Auburn Hmmmm...we went this route this year. To this point 0-3 with under 100 total yards of offense the last 2 games. Defense has given up 40+ We do win special teams! QB got hit in first quarter of last game, 3 breaks and a dislocation of his non throwing wrist. JV also hasn't won a game. Defectors are starting to come. I miss the wing-t now. At least I had answers to things there and kids weren't scared to be in the backfield.

I miss the wing-t now. At least I had answers to things there and kids weren't scared to be in the backfield. No kidding, I joined a new staff this year and I miss my old offense. I had so much familiarity with it, I had a lot of answers for different problems. Right now I can call one of three run plays, and our OL won't block any of them for more than 1 second. So frustrating. Really, our scheme isn't the problem, even if it also isn't the answer. But I recognize that we're at that point where we will improve. Kids are starting to realize they can't just roll the ball out and win, they have to take coaching and practice hard.

We have scored 140 points in three games and we have the #1 ranked offense in our class in the state. The problem? We have also given up 180 points in three games and are 1-2. I feel your pain wingtol!

We have a team of freshmen who were undefeated 2 straight years in middle school. We haven't scored a point in 2 weeks. I'll see my way out. that's a tough one...."were were good in middle school" has gotten many a man fired, when the townsfolk tell you "this group is the most talented we've ever had" and they bomb as freshman, get outta dodge, but they won't ever believe that they just aren't good, it will be your fault not to mention the middle school coaches will probably be in the stands with the daddies talking about how they had ol' jerry at runninback and linebacker instead of defensive tackle and him was biiiig and ran haaarrd Don't forget the Pee Wee coach that won back-to-back championships with them... Funny, I've never met a pee wee coach that lost a game

Funny, I've never met a pee wee coach that lost a game In my experience, lower level coaches who don't understand why kids struggle as they move up are usually bad coaches. Having coached kids from pee-wee (my son) up to varsity, you really get a sense of how much a child's physical development matters. This isn't the NFL or even college, the disparity in physical maturity is HUGE for the kids we get.
BTW, I've lost more than a couple pee-wee games.

Funny, I've never met a pee wee coach that lost a game I love that this is the same everywhere 5 schools for me, 5 texas towns, and every kid won the "superbowl" in pee-wee unrelated to football but still funny, I'm an assistant wrestling coach which is at best a 4th or 5th tier sport here, so every time we get a move-in kid from wrasslin' country (aka the north) the kid's dad was a state champion wrestler in high school. I mean it's an unbelievable percentage of northern state champions who end up moving to texas for some reason, and weirdly the dads really don't look all that athletic and the kids are slugs...go figure

Game 1-
We're down 14-0 and hadn't made a single defensive statistic yet. 2 plays, 2 TDs.
Game 2- Win toss, 3 and out, punt blocked for a TD. Offense gets ball back, drives, throws pick 6. 14-0 and defense hadn't been on the field yet.
We lose the game 28-14, and they scored on TWO blocked punts for TDs and a pick six...
Have mercy on my poor kids' souls...

For many years we played on Thursday night before Labor Day weekend (not all schools in our state did but most unless there was a facility conflict) especially after state enacted a law that public schools could not open until after Labor Day. We gave kids-families Friday, Saturday, Sunday (when we usually watched game film) off but let them know that we would labor on Labor Day, and it was a required practice. If they missed there would be consequences. Three full days off should be enough. And it was rarely a problem. I realize situations may be different elsewhere. But Labor Day was on our Calendar from Day One and discussed at our Parents' Meeting in June. Same here. We play on Thursday, take the weekend off. Tell them well in advance. We go at 6 pm on Labor Day. Made it clear--unless someone dies or you have a doctor's note, you better be at practice on Monday or you won't play. We've never had more than 1 miss, and never anyone who was a real player. There's always that one sandwich eater who isn't really interested in playing anyhow.

Update: we're on a 3 game streak. We've reached 3-4, our next opponent is 7-0 and is outscoring their opponents something like 250-30 on the year. It'll be a good measure of how far we've come.
