Mike, its gonna be tough to go by grade, might get some kids out, a couple years too old for the grade their in....somebody's gonna get hurt, lol.....age is better.....if you're in a large population area, with a bunch of kids playing, you could have single age teams, or just the more conventional two age teams.....anyway....we're in a rural, low population area, so had 8-10yr. olds on one team....unlimited playing weight.....ball carrier weight limit was 110 lbs(think we changed it over the years to 115 lbs?.).....11-12 yr. olds(could turn 13 after sept 1st and still play)..... unlimited playing weight....ball carriers 120 lbs....changed that to 125 after many years.....they only had to make the weight once, at a pre-season jamboree/weigh-in/birth cert check....then were good to go the rest of the season.....not trying to be negative here but.....just to show an example of the grade vs age thing.....two of my bigger 12 yr. olds in back to back seasons = both were still at the elementary school in 5th grade.....one was about as tall as I am, 5'10" and 145 pounds and very fast(could hit you)....the other kid was about 5' tall but about 260 lbs.....could you imagine these kids playing with 5th graders, who were the right age for the grade they're in?.......it would be ugly.....parents would have your hide, lol. I had enough scared momma's when everyone was in the right grade....all it took was them seeing (1) really big kid on the other team...."Coach, I don't want Marcus playing QB, that big kid might hurt him".....then me...."Don't worry, those really big kids are cupcakes, they won't hit anyone hard, I promise" ...then under my breath as she leaves for the stands...."I mean I hope?", lol.... Can't lose my starting QB, sorry Mom. ;D

Our league does not do unlimited playing weight at any level except the top level (Heavyweight) where the age limit is 14. Here the ball carrier weight limit is 168 lbs. There are four other divisions including a lightweight division with the same age limit as the heavywei ght level but a maximum playing weight of 123 lbs. All divisions are based on age and weight with allowances for older-lighter players and younger-heavier players. You can find the entire age / weight division breakdown here: www.tcyfl.net/downloads.php

Our league basically has been playing by age with weight restrictions on ball carriers for over 30yrs. Basically how we establish ball carrying weight is by taking the avg. weight of all the kids that weigh in at tryouts.
Ex.
8-9 - 77lbs 10-11 - 115lbs 12-13 - 130lbs
I'm coaching 8-9's and each season one of my top priorities is to teach my 40-60lbs kids how to deal with the kids that weigh 100-160lbs. My 8yr old 60lbs played his first season of contact last year, he was welcomed to football by 9yr weighing 138. de-cleated him!. Tears flowing! and a nice bump on his arm to remind him that he needs to hustle on every play and keep his head on a swivel. Don't get it twisted one of my first safety priorities is to teach my 40-60lbs kids to deal with the 100-160lbs kids. Unfortunately my 8 thought he good take a play off and slack. The hit was clean and legal. On the flipside to what most people seem to think that heavy always means bigger hitters isn't always true, In our league of 8-9's and on my team the bigger hitters are the 55-75lbs.
Now I know someone will say that things change with kids once you get into 12-13yr olds, I would agree except I personally was that little kid that that opposing coaches deemed to little to matter. I can recount countless de-cleaters on players much larger than me. I attribute this from being able to participate in an age program rather than weight. My only fear in college weighing only 155lbs was not getting hit by a 255lb LB it was getting walked down by one that could run a 4.4 So props to all the age programs out their!

No overall weight limits at any age level. Ball carrier and tight end weight limits only as follows: - Pee-Wee level (6-7 years old - usually grades 1 & 2) 80 lbs. BC, 100 lbs. TE
- Junior level (8-9 years old - usually grades 3 & 4) 110 lbs. BC, 130 lbs. TE
- Senior level (10-12 years old - usually grades 5 & 6) 140 lbs. BC, 160 lbs. TE

Thank you all for the input
We are voting to raise our backfield limitations in an unlimited weight league from...
2nd grade, 75 lbs. 3rd grade, 80 lbs. 4th grade, 90 lbs. 5th grade, 100 lbs. 6th grade, 110 lbs. 7th grade, 125 lbs. 8th grade Seniors have no backfield weight limitations.
to....
2nd grade, 80 lbs. 3rd grade, 90 lbs. 4th grade, 100 lbs. 5th grade, 115 lbs. 6th grade, 125 lbs. 7th grade, no backfield weight limitations. 8th grade, no backfield weight limitations.
Per your feed back and others we are well below the national averages because of fearful undereducated mothers...yet a TE or SE that can weigh whatever is allowed to catch passes down field...or these weight restricted backs have to block monster defensive ends. Makes no sense.

I had to laugh at that one coachmsl! It's a good thing that there's no weight limit for coaches in our league!
