We are making some changes in our program and our coaching staff is looking into how other programs organize their teams. We are interested in how other programs treat the JV and Varsity teams, especially regarding practices. Does your program have their JV and Varstity teams conduct completely separate practices, have them practice all together, or have regularly scheduled drills or common drill sessions.
We have had separate teams for 8 seasons now, but we are having some doubts about the wisdom of this practice. Especially when it comes to having a program mentality in our players.

We are all together. Each week during weekend meetings we finish up with who we allow to play JV that following Monday. Its never seniors and rarely starters. And then its usually starters who either havent started much, or ones that may start but get rotated out a lot. So its mostly juniors who do not play on varsity at all and sophomores. We do invite some freshmen to stay after their game to play on the JV. The freshmen practice by themselves and 10th-12th all practice together.

We all practice together (Fr-Sr). When the Fr and So are on D the Jr-Sr are on O. Each of the groups are coached by the varsity staff at their respective position.
As far as who plays JV, any Jr or So who does not start varsity, they are usually second team varsity players. The So. usuualy fill in as second team JV players. We also have So. games on Thursdays.
We run the same O and D at every level.

Our kids who play JV games still practice with the whole team. We do not have the numbers for JV to practice separately. Our 9-10 team practice separately.
