Doesn't matter, his English isn't good enough. They think "Wing-T" is a position. Seriously, they say that the DW team plays "Ace" with "two Wing-T's." They also call DW power a reverse, which I can not explain. geeeeeeeez louise... that right there would be a "bye bye" moment for me

Heard this just recently, "catch the ball!" Well that would be the purpose, wouldn't it? Telling a player to catch the football can be right in only a very limited amount of situations. I really do think it can be said and not sound just plain stupid, but as a coaching point or general saying then that is terrible.

I laugh at this thread... mainly because I know I have used many of these... and even moreso, I bet half the people on here have used some these... and if not have used something that has ticked someone else off at times...
I mean its all in fun to make fun of ourselves... but those that say they get mad about it.. really?
You get mad about it?

I mean its all in fun to make fun of ourselves... but those that say they get mad about it.. really? You get mad about it? We had a team camp last week I was working with our third group o-line during a scrimmage, the words "you have to block somebody" came out of my mouth, my most hated comment of all time. I caught myself and coached and corrected the problem, instead of sending in another play with the instructions "block somebody"

I just know we are all guilty of this type of coach speak at one time or another...

We had a 7 man comp on last Sunday (light hearted fun comp) and I couldn't help but stand on the sideline screaming "watch the run, watch the pass, watch the playaction, make tackle" and just about every other terrible coaching thing you can call about defense. I clearly heard another guy screaming "block someone". Just mad me laugh again rereading this thread

;Get your head in the game". Like the players are thinking about ice cream or homework while they are being blown up by the guy across from them. I just busted out laughing in the library when I pictured a guy gettin whooped and thinking about an ice cream truck and not realizing he is playing. Thanks

Its funny, I was at our camp yesterday ( Before even reading this) and I told a guy to get in an athletic stance. I realized what I said and looked at him and said, "Wow that was a helpful comment., not really." Then I went over the stance again with him.

Watch the ball on 3rd and 4 is a big difference in don't jump! Kinda like the difference in don't fumble vs Ball security! We say "Ball Key"

"Try not to suck out there". Oh wait, that is what I say when I put a kid in the game.....pretty mindless I know, but it helps to ease tension at times.

There is an NFL Films clip of a coach from the late 60s going over that same mindless defensive cliches - "Watch screen! Watch draw! Watch the pass!" A few seconds later, perhaps realizing how ridiculous he sounded, the coach said, "Watch everything!" :-)
My coaching idol will always be Bill Walsh. I always noticed how relatively quiet he was, and how when he spoke to players, it was almost always one on one, and in very measured tones. He was a teacher in the purest form.

The one that we hear alot is you gotta play to win. Like we don't understand why we are out there.

It gets better. They don't know what a stiff-arm is, apparently it's called an eyz-man, as in they saw the Heisman trophy statue and had the idea. The video game is called "Mayden," and we have a formation in the play book called "Riffle" because a coach went to some English place to get an offense and it was passed orally from coach to coach an by the time someone sat down to make a written play book the mispronunciation had stuck and nobody realized that it was the inverse of "pistol."

Went down to the middle school to watch a game. We were on defense and the other team was rolling their QB out over and over again breaking contain. He had the option to throw or run every play. So how does the coach adjust or coach em up??? He yells at the top of his lungs...with a lolly pop in his mouth no less... "ARE YOU GUYS GONNA GET AFTER THAT QUARTERBACK OR WHAAAAAAT!!!!" What great instruction

How about when your coach up in the box in still complaining about a bad penalty after they have already walked it off and spotted the ball. I know it wasn't a good call, but now we need something for 3rd and 12 instead of 3rd and 2.

Be an athlete is a big one. My personal favorite is "Stop freelancing." The guy I coached with last year said it all the time. WTF does that even mean? It means don't do your own thing, do what you have been coached to do and what we expect you to do.

We just played a team that loved their "reverse" (technically a jet off the ISO action, but I'll take what I can get around here). Every down where they could conceive it, HC is yelling "Watch the reverse." 1-10, 2-1, 3-15, all over the field. Finally they run it for a big gain because, well, it was their fastest player running it, and HC is jumping up and down yelling "I told them to watch the reverse!" If you had any balls at all, you would've told him it wasn't a "reverse" ;D There is an offense called the "reverse I offense".

Isn't that still just an "I"? Not if you're trying to sell books, DVDs, and clinic talks.

Isn't that still just an "I"? Not if you're trying to sell books, DVDs, and clinic talks. Yes, if you want to be perceived as being innovative to sell books and DVDs, it is absolutely imperative that you give your offense a new name including universally understood offenses like the "I" in this case.

This thread had me laughing and thinking about my HC, he uses a bunch of one liners that no player understands and never explains the meaning. Most of the time the players look at me confused asking "what does that mean"?
-"You got to bone the FB" -during a film session: "Defense you want to go 2 and out then go grab a can of coolie" -"You got to rob the robber"
But the one that irritates me the most on Friday nights as the OC, after every play I call he asked "what did you call". He has a playcall sheet and is on the phones with me...just listen and look!
