Funny I can't find where I said I go 1 on 1 all practice. It's really hard for me to understand the thinking here. I never said I thought the coach did anything wrong. He thought going 3 qtrs would get them ready for 4. I don't agree. If someone wants to play starters all 4 qtrs in a game 100-0, I don't really care. Some here say they can't get their players ready for 4 qtrs in practice, I say I can. I assume they've had success with that approach. I know I've had success with mine. I've already tried to bow out by saying I'm willing to agree to disagree, so now I'm done with this, as it will continue to go nowhere. I've got a game to win. Good luck tonight everyone, COACH"EM UP!!! OORAH!!!

I know its hard to judge a game from a box score, but I looked it up. They only scored twice in the second half. Once in the 3rd and once in the fourth. So it was 63-0 at half, scores included a PR for a touchdown and a fumble recover for a touchdown. I don't think this was running up the score at all. It was just good team thumping a bad team. that happens. It sucks if you're the bad team, but it happens.

This is a pretty hot topic and I think a few have hit the nail on the head with what our own definitions of running it up are. I say bring it on, play hard and I'll find a way to take positives from our game. Keep fighting. I am a high school Head Coach (1st year at my school) in Ontario...I'm a volunteer and so are my three coaches. We coach grades 9-12 on a Varsity squad. We just finished 0-6 in conference and 0-1 in exhibition play (4 post season exhibition game were cancelled due to poor opponent morale). Our scores are as follows: - 41-6 (L to 3x defending champs) - 73-10 - 63-6 (exhibition match-up...private school) - 18-10 - 55-7 - 56-28 - 60-21
I volunteered to take this team after last year's HC and OC walked away to another team so they could "have a better chance to win". The program has folded 3x in the past 10 years and has never had a winning record, or a coach for more than 2 seasons.
Most of you are posting as the top program complaining about winning big against an opponent. I speak from the other end and I can tell you that the 4 of 6 games the ref asked me for a running clock and I said "no thank you". I want every last snap that my team can take, because how do you get better at football? Play football.
On a side note, our opponents often kept in grade 12 starters against our 2s, 3s, and 4s. The team that put up 73 had a 42-0 lead at the half with the flexbone triple option, which they are good at. 2nd half was an aerial assault. Does it bother me that the top programs in our district want to keep the building teams down...yes, but I know and my guys know that we are all doing our part to improve our district as a whole by improving our team. Which is more than most teams in our area can say. Coaches who run up the score may be doing positive things with their program, but they do need to be aware of the impact on the rest of the league. As long as they are solely interested in their team only, I feel it will be difficult to be successful beyond our district.
(Note: Despite huge scores our district has only had one team progress to the provincial bowl game series and lost....round one conference playoff loss every other year. Not one provincially or nationally ranked team ever)

My thoughts are he purposely ran it up. His reasoning is flawed. If he ran it up because his players were out of shape because 1 day per week they didn't play another quarter of football he is wrong. His practice must be very low tempo. He lost because they got outplayed, not because they were too tired. My senior year we averaged 58 points per game. We were done at half. We won a state title. We didn't get tired in the playoffs. He got whooped and was upset about it. He ran it up. As a coach, I am not out to embarrass teams. In fact, when we are up by 35 we start pulling players to get younger guys reps so we can make sure they are coached up. A lot of times in the playoffs that experience pays more dividends than being "in shape" as he is weakly suggesting.

He didn't owe anyone an explanation. That just averages out to 3 TD's a quarter.. between defense and special teams that is extremely modest in HS football when a very good team plays a struggling team. It's a non issue with sensitive parents if you ask me. We are letting the "pink ribbon" people ruin our game coaches. Stand up for your players and teach them to play football the right way. If your 3rd string RB scores from 70 out not your fault. His reason for doing so was he lost because his players were tired in a playoff game. B.S. He got outplayed and/or coached and couldn't handle it. His 3rd string RB wasn't scoring because he played started until the end of the 3rd quarter no matter the score. You didn't read the article I am guessing. I'd rather use that time to get experience for younger players who will help you come playoff time when the inevitable injuries arise.

I wasn't coaching here yet, but in 2002 our varsity team blew teams out all the time and our coach always took the starters out at half time. In the state championship game they lost and just werent in sink. I definitely think it was partially do to the starters never playing a complete game. They beat the team earlier in the season by a couple touchdowns. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using proboards In high school, my team averaged 58.3 points per game. We were done at halftime in all regular season games. We only gave up 13 points going into the playoffs. We blew out the first two teams in the playoffs with starters only playing the first 3 quarters (if that). We won it all, never once did I feel tired. This is a cop out in my opinion. In actuality in the playoffs you probably are playing teams that were in a similar situation a lot as well. Sidenote: My junior year I was a starting QB, got injured up 48 points in the 3rd quarter and people were questioning I was still in a game at a point when it clearly did not matter. I still played the following weak, but at probably about 60%.

His reasoning was that he lost because his team lost because they only played 2 quarters and not 3. That does not seem legit to me. That can easily be fixed and addressed in practice. It appears he got outplayed and out coached and couldn't admit it so he needed an excuse. In other words its a coaching problem disguised as a problem with the kids. I do not like coaches blaming kids for a loss. Read more: coachhuey.com/thread/66428/running-score?page=3#ixzz3He7V3zIi

He's blaming himself for not having his team prepared.

Yep I read the article coach and didn't have a problem with his explanation. Doesn't mean I agree / disagree with his reasoning I just don't think that he ran up the score. Your disagreement with him is in his coaching and preparation. I was just answering the thread and gave my opinion on if I thought this coach intentionally ran up the score. I respect your opinion too coach. Your passionate about his decision because of your experiences and that's cool too. I'm just saying not all blowouts and 70+ point games are some intentional disrespectful attempt to rub an opponents nose in it. Sometimes the other team just can't tackle.

I'm not blaming the players at all, I'd blame the coach....As I stated earlier, the coach in question here seems sincere and doesn't come across like he's lying to cover his ass. It's a legit reason to keep your starters in for 3 quarters.

I have 7 kids that start both sides of the ball, and play on KO and KOR. We are the smallest team #'s wise, of any team we play Then I don't understand how you're able to go best on best through inside run period, 7 on 7, and team offensive and defensive periods for an entire practice. You have to split up your best, or put them against your next best. In the past I have worked "inside run against half line so we can get 1s on 1s. Just have to get creative. You don't need to do it a lot as the fits and leverage etc are more important.

I just don't see how it solves the problem of having a team ready to play hard for a full game.

At the end of the day I wish everyone would just abide by the "you coach your team and I'll coach mine" mentality.

A few weeks ago we were up 35-0, vs. an 0-5 team. There was :14 seconds left in the first half. The ball was at the 50 yd. line. They went for it on 4th & 5...instead of punting. To me they were saying "we are playing to win." I went 4 verts and it would have been a TD except they called a hold on us. I subsequently took a knee. Thought I was going to go to blows with them at half-time. They were yelling about us being up 35-0 and throwing. I said that if you punt...I take a knee and we move on. To me his play was a genuine statement of competition, and I have no past history vs. this coach/program as he is brand new and we haven't played this team since 2009. We returned the opening kickoff for a TD to start the 2nd half...I pulled most of my starters immediately (I only have 30 kids total) & I didn't throw the ball 1x in the second . He still made issue again after the game. WAS I WRONG??? I think not and he never took out a starter. If an opponent concedes by pulling starters then I do the same...if he leaves them in, then its my call how to handle it and he deals with the consequences.

I took a hard lesson as a Freshman coach about 15 years ago from an vet that whooped up on my team. They where up by about 40 and it was the 4th quarter and we forced them to punt. I got my team all hyped up to go for the all out block. The coach called a timeout. So instead of calling the block off like a smart coach and taking my butt whipping like a man I kept the block on... SHOWED IT and he called a fake for a TD. Flick of the wrist and 60 yards later my coaches and parents are screaming at them calling them classless and dirty. The coach shook my hand after the game and he pulled me in and put his arm around me and simply said... "coach.. I like you so I'm going to tell you this... if you keep playing to win... I gotta keep playing to win." Lesson learned: If you're getting whipped..be professional about it... don't put your team in a worse situation by trying to throw out everything just to save face. Play hard and coach your team up till the end and respect that your opponent was better than you that day. Managing getting blown out is very important. A 60-0 game could easily be a 42-8 game with some coaching and management.. and I"m sorry It does not look or feel as bad to your team your fans and coaches. I get into this debate a lot with my fellow coaches but for those of you that have never had to coach projects and undermanned teams you don't understand what it's like being down 28-0 in the first quarter and having to hold on for dear life for 36 min.

But the question remains, how intense is a 78-0 game? There are no quick whistles, it isn't thud, and the QB isn't wearing a red jersey so it's more intense than practice. But that does assume that everyone conducts practice that way. I have seen some teams over the years whose live is LIVE in practice.
