Who does them? What programs do you use? Do you sell them or give them away? I make them on the side. Not a plug; always curious if there is someone better than me out there (that was bragging a little). Go to www.reelsportsreplay.com to see what I am talking about.

I have usually teamed up with a senior or two to cut the highlight film. We use iMovie on the Macs in our media center. It does a nice job. We sell them for 5 bucks each.

I forgot to ask how long are your films? Do anything special with them (film from the sideline, weight room stuff)?
Chuck - Getting the players involved is very helpful.

we use TD Video and Imovie to make our hi-light films. Our tapes are usaully close to 45 min. long. My son makes our team on his PS2 and college football 06 and then I plug the PS2 into the input on the front of the vcr and have him play about 8 games and I recored each one of them. I will cut up some of the ps2 games and insert them in with our regular cutups. Like a long TD run or a qb sack. Our kids love it. We sell ours for 10.00 VHS and 15.00 DVD

Nice - Did the PS2 thing with some kids last year. Those guys created the teams to look like us and the opponents...that is a nice touch.
The big thing I do......shouldn't tell you guys...ohh what the heck...
I PUT A MICROPHONE ON PLAYERS LIKE THE NFL!!!!
Extremely awesome stuff; especially in big games!!!

I make our team's highlight DVD. We then show it at the team banquet and have some available to buy right then for $10.00 After that we send out a mailer to all the parents selling them for $12.00 and often get checks for $20, $50, $100 just ordering one DVD but wanting to also give to the program. With last year's DVD sale (2004) we were able to buy a field stencil and field paint ($500 total) and still have some money left over.
I use plain 'ol Windows Movie Maker. We get the cut-ups from the Webb GameDay program we use for our video editing. So throughout the year I make weekly highlight tapes for our team to pump them up before each game from the previous game and save those clips for the final highlight DVD. I put the .avi file onto my external Hard Drive and take it home and do it there. Cut it, add music etc. . . Then I make the DVD in DVD-Lab Pro. Great DVD making program and really easy. Makes menus, menu transistions with music and all the bells and whistles.
In this year's DVD I included the team highlight film (3+ mins) then offensive (15 mins) and defensive (10 mins) highlight films along with a special teams highlight film (5 mins). Then we have an extras section that included our Scout Team Super Bowl Game (10 mins), our Oline vs Dline Cannonball Contest we held during fall camp (15 mins), and finally our Skit Night (30 mins) we held after camp. The main thing for me this year was to include as much video as I could that included the whole team. That leads to more players wanting to buy one which leads to more $$. I will try to post a sample of the main highlight video later today for an example.

1. 5 minute intro. Our teams theme song is the Terminator 2 soundtrack. This year I the start of Terminator 2 the movie and integrated it with our players blasting dudes.
2. 5 minutes of weight room stuff and lift a thon. 3 minutes of summer camp footage.
3. 2 minutes of preseason getting ready stuff. Putting logos on helmets, stretching, taping, etc.
4. 6 minutes of regular season footage 5. 6 minutes of post season footage
6. Top 10 offensive plays 7. Top 15 defensive plays (we had a better defense this year) 8. Top 10 special teams plays
9. 20 minutes of pregame skits, game sounds, and miked up player sounds.
10. Top 6 "Not So" great plays (our players getting blasted!!!
11. All Metro - All the players who made it to the all Sacramento team get special footage of them.
12. To the Victors go the spoils - We were lucky enough to win a section title (equivolant to a state championship; CA doesn't have state playoffs). I filmed Maxpreps.com giving us an award, our teams trip to the state capital, we had two guys get full ride scholarships (filmed signing day), and of course....THE RINGS...I filmed ring day and added that footage in.
13. Tribute to the seniors - credits (giving props to boosters and businesses that support our program)
NOT DONE YET
On the second DVD is a complete cut up of the highlights from each game.
Two DVD set. It takes me 4 months to produce. I charge $50 because I do everything. Players pay because they know that the film captures a great season and the discs will be treasured forever.

I burned 25 DVDs that included every game on it and gave them to the seniors for free.
I made some highlights for them to watch in the 7th game of the season, but I would not have had the time to do a highlight cutup for them before Christmas.....I really admire you guys that do.

I do a weekly highlight tape for the defense--we watch it Thursday night. Then I do an offensive one and defensive one at the end of the season. Real old school--just game film, our kids love it.

if we're talking about highlight films for recruiters & colleges then some of the digital sports editing programs may have the capability rather easily.
DSV has a special section just for creating such highlight tapes

Who wants a copy? Our team was section champions (CA's equivalant to a state title). We run the wing-t on offense and the "Brain Dead" defense. I will send you a copy of our highlight film. Send me an email at bdalbon@cebridge.net I am asking for $5. Shipping and the cost of the disc. If you take me up on this offer, let me know what you think of the film. As stated in this thread I also make team highlight films for other schools as well. Go to www.reelsportsreplay.com and search around. Thanks

What is the "Brain Dead" defense? It sounds like a good fit for many of my players.

It is an over shifted 4-4 (people call that a 50). Take a standard pro formation with I backs and receivers split to both sides. TE is right (looking at it from a D stand point)
The weak DE is in a 7 tech. on the weak OT NG - head up DT - on strong OT DE - on strong side in a 7 on TE ROLB - walked away usually splitting flanker and TE LOLB - walked away usually splitting WR and OT Cover 3 behind it.
There are multiple things you can do out of it, but the main things are this.
It is gap control. Both DE's usually control the inside gap (strong DE C and weak DE B) depends on the steps of the OTs.
NG - CANNOT TOUCH THE CENTER - If he touches the center we "fire" him. Replace him. Our NG's are usually tiny wrestler dudes who are way faster/quicker than the centers they face. About 99% of the time they slant weak and then retrace their steps if the play goes strong.
The DT does not let the strong OT get inside of him. If he does, he gets fired. Control that B gap and keep those hogs off of the LBs. The OLBs are usually tall lanky athletes who take away pass lanes and hit like trucks. A lot of time they play on TEs and use the same technique as the DEs. They have to be strong guys.
The DBs are DBs. Cover three dudes who give a lot of cushion and let the OLBs take the flats. Nobody beats us deep with double moves...our corners don't give a crap what you do under 10 yards. Our FS is another LB basically...alley player who better read keys and get involved in playing the run. The last 3 FS's that I have had have been 1st team all league. One guy had ZERO PICKS. He got it because he was an animal on running plays and had over 10 tackles behind the LOS!!!!!!!!
Anything else? email me at the link provided on the left side of the screen here.

Ahh yes, I use Adobe Premiere 1.5. Once I can get a better flavor for Affect Effects I can do some sweet titles and motion graphics in the future. I have finiished our film. I think is it pretty cool. I would love to see some of your fellas work. Email me and we can exchange highlight films. bdalbon@cebridge.net Go to www.reelsportsreplay.com for more information as well. Looking forward to hearing from you guys.

found a real good 'soundtrack' for highlights....
Overseer "Wreckage" (tons of fast rough beats to carry a highlight reel, includes that one Mitsubishi truck commercial track 'horndog')
or
NFL Films "The Power & The Glory" - remixes of the Sam Spade NFL Films music

Mr. Ball,
I do! How? I run a small (tiny) video editing company on the side. I make individual recruiting films and team highlight films as a side job to teaching. I create films for about 5 schools a year.
Our head coach does not want to pay me as if I was an outside business therefore I have to charge the players. I hate doing it. I hate it. I wish our program would pay me and then we can hand them out for next to nothing.
I could throw clips together and add music and call that a highlight film, but I do a lot more than that. Not only for my team, but for other schools.
Most schools fundraise for the highlight films or include them in a spirit pack payment. Our school is the hardest school to deal with!!! And I teach here!!!!!
