Didn't realize that I had actually filled out an application to be cast in a soap opera. Don't get paid nearly enough to deal with all that drama. Adios Felicia.

It was hard for me to turn down a salary that would offer me more than double my salary as well as teach something I enjoy especially in a good district and community.
Coaching stipends only go so far

I find it interesting that of 65 voters only one said that he moved for more money. In their comments several have included money as a factor but only one voted that way. IMO, it's a convention in our business that, "We don't do it for the money". So, I think that when it came time to push a button a lot of times a 20% raise was just another "Working condition". I think that it's really funny how taboo the subject of money is among coaches.

Keep in mind coach, that for those 65%, even 100% raise for "coaching" is still only maybe 300 extra a month (pre tax) and generally that change comes with a host of others.

I agree with that. I can honestly say I would never leave my current coaching job for money, because in my neck of the woods, coaching stipends are pretty standard. We would be talking the difference of a few hundred dollars and that's a few hundred dollars per year, not month!

Edit.. there should not be a percent sign behind 65 in my post above.

I agree and I probably wouldn't leave for just a higher stipend. In fact I know that I wouldn't because I didn't. If you leave one teaching/coaching job for another one because the new job pays better, that still counts as leaving for the money. The primary reason that I taught and coached in different school districts was because the teaching salary in my "coaching" district was substantially lower.

Every year I coach, at the end of the season I make a "pro" vs "con" list to determine if I want to continue. Last year the con list won by 2 to 1 at least. I am not coaching for $$$, as the extra dough really is just Christmas money. I just love to coach, so if it sucks where I am at I am going to find a place or situation where it doesn't suck...very simple.
My main points were that the program under the HC had taken a very negative attitude type of vibe. The HC was way in over his head and just started to lay blame every where except where it should have been, him. Also, he wasn't honest with his coaching staff about a lot of things. I feel bad because he is a good guy, just couldn't handle the job.
I left and planned on taking a year off. Missed it terribly (like DCOHIO said I would), and was thinking about a job I was offered, when another HC I really respect called me and offered me a position. Things have been great so far and I am sure they will continue to be great.
The thing coaches, especially younger guys, have to keep in mind is this, this is a profession where patience will pay off if you can be disciplined to let things play out. I could have stayed in my former situation and been miserable, thinking I could never get another job ( a common refrain among coaches). I could have applied for every position I saw advertised, I could have taken the first thing offered and on and on. But by being patient and waiting until the right thing came along I am at a place that is terrific for me.
In all fairness, I am not a teacher so a teaching job means nothing to me. I know some guys are bound by their teaching gig being tied to the coaching and I get that.

personal choice and anger
i coached at my alma mater for 4 years... had it turned around, had schools first ever playoff appearance but our HC was burnt out. He steppe down.
10 people applied for the job (including a 21 year old me) i would have been fine with anyone but ONE person getting the HC job... that one guy got it cuz he went to school with the AD. Nice guy and everything, just in over his head in terms of running a program
i was the only person from the previous year's varsity staff asked to stay on
i was angry so i began searching for jobs. I found the place i currently am and although it has been a rebuilding project, it has been very worthwhile. We have made the program relevant for the first time in 30 years.
things ended up lining up well for me and i was able to get a teaching job here and overall i am pretty happy.

I'm the one...and it wasn't a raise in coaching stipend...it was a 20 percent increase in overall salary...and as I said, it was a major factor, not the only one. It's a bit more complicated than just getting a little more money.

For me I also got a raise (in the teaching job) to move home to Michigan. This wasn't the biggest factor, but it sure doesn't hurt. My wife also got a huge raise. This move has been phenomenal for us.

philosophical differences with HC & AD. This is my second consecutive fall not coaching and we are staying in the same community as I have a non teaching profession.
Last year was tougher not as bad this year...until my freshman son came home with his playbook. Our HS was a bad 1-7 last year and only scored 5 offensive TD's all year. The plays they have drawn up make no sense and are not even diagramed to be blocked correctly. The staff is poor but are all the soft types the AD likes.
I'm now going to have to live with it as it was my choice to leave and I'm not going back unless a new HC is hired and with the current AD I don't see that happening.

Already posted our HC resigned and then got another HC job so we all went, with that move I took a pretty hefty pay cut in my coaching salary. Went from about 2700 to splitting a Jv salary for 800 a season now. So I am defiantly not in it for the money!!

Left the place I coached at for 15 years to go to my alma mater. Perfect situation so far- Head coach is a friend of mine that I played with, 2 of my assistant coaches on defense are actually guys that coached me when I was there many moons ago......aaaannd my daughter (who is a very pretty girl) is going to be a freshman this year so I'll have many people in the building keeping an eye on her.
