Missouri
Phil Lite - Staley High School (Best coach I have ever met at any level)
John Roderique - Webb City High School (10 championships in like 20 years at a mid size school. Somewhere around 133-5 in the last 10 years)
Scott Bailey - Lamar High School (4 championships in the last 4 years at a small school)
Greg Jones - Kearney High School (Only team to beat Webb in the last 10ish years and gets more out of his kids than almost any coach I know)
Judd Naeger - Valle Catholic (Small private school so he has an edge others don't but they're consistently in the championship game and always well coached)
4 of the all time best Missouri coaches retired this year
Fred Bouchard - 5 rings Greg Oder - 3 Rings Ryan Shartz - 1 Ring Royce Boehm - 3 Rings
Wing T wise
Chris Holt - Lathrop Steve Cook - Lafayette County Todd Dunn - Lawson
Those three are probably the top Wing T guys in the state

Here in Iowa these are the guys I look up to. Ed Thomas, Aplington, Parkersburg Many of you may have heard Coach Thomas's story a few years back. He was a coaching legend who pumped out winning team after winning team. Currently sits like 6th in the state in career wins. It's not so much about what he did on the field though that got me to respect him as a person. He helped turn a town around after it had been completely devastated by a tornado. Then a short time after was tragically shot to death by a former player at a morning lifting session. If you haven't had a chance to read the book or listen to the audio book I highly suggest doing so. It will give you a whole new perspective on coaching. www.amazon.com/Sacred-Acre-Ed-Thomas-Story/dp/0310318971Randy Hinkel, Madrid Coach Hinkel is 4th on the all time list but once again it's about what this guy did off the field more so then on. He's a hell of a coach and to get the talent out of the kids he has considering the size, it's remarkable. It was much to my surprise when I saw the job at Madrid was open early last summer. I knew it would have been much bigger news that Randy had retired then it was so I figured something was up but applied for he job anyway. I got called in for an interview and absolutely fell in the love with what Randy had built. What seemed too good to be true, was. Randy retired from teaching so in order to continue coaching he had to be re-hired. Legally they have to interview so many and I just happened to be one of them. It was a good experience for me regardless. Sadly, Randy passed away of a massive heart attack just 6 months after retiring from teaching this year. Gone way too soon but he'll forever go down in Iowa coaching history in my book. Jerry Pezzetti I had the opportunity to coach on Jerry's staff at Ankeny Centennial for a few short years. Coach Pezzetti is 2nd or 3rd all time in career wins and has turned Ankeny into a 4A powerhouse year after year. He now co-head coaches with his son Ryan Pezzetti and it's remarkable that he still gets out there and coached. He's getting up there in age, and sure doesn't say or do a whole lot schematically anymore but that doesn't take away from the success he has built from the ground up. Gary Swenson, West Des Moines Valley Personally I think Coach Swenson is the best in the state right now. It would be between him and West Des Moines Downling's Head Coach. Top 6 all time in wins, ton of state championships in class 4A and he's singly handily turned the Valley program into one of the top 3 in the state. X's and O's genius and genuinely a great guy. I would agree! I was very impressed with how Coach Hinkel was able to build a dynasty at Madrid. They were one of those teams that played way above their talent level every single year. He was a GREAT man! Coach Thomas was salt of the earth as well! The big thing all these guys have in common is what they do off the field! They teach their players to be great men!

To Michigan I would add Mike Giannone who just left Macomb Dakota for Warren De La Salle. His DC and the new head man at Dakota is Greg Baur, the best coach I have been around period, we will see how he does as HC. Bob Lantzy who just got back into the game. He doesn't have the state titles but has made several appearances and is a great coach. Both of the above respectively built their programs from nothing. Coach Yes I would agree on Mike Giannone, where is Bob Lantzy from? Its funny even within our own state, you have regions of great coaches out there you might not know of Boys, don't forget Joe Noha from Menominee. Powerhouse of da U.P, ehe?

I met and worked some camps with Coach Thomas. My HS coach began his coaching and teaching career at A-P then left for a while coaching at my alma mater, and for about the last roughly 10 years has been back at A-P. Coach Thomas was as good as they come. Anything you can do to read about him would serve you well.

Noha has only been the Maroons' HC for four years, taking over from the legend Ken Hofer (41 years).
Probably most successful long-serving UP coach is Jeff Olson of Ishpeming.

Mike Thomas in Texas. Next guy isn't even close. I have never heard of him, where does he coach? Best guy in our part of the state is Gary Joseph, Katy HS. Yeah I never heard of Mike Thomas either, not that I should, don't really keep up with who's who around the state, have heard of Gary Joseph from Katy though...1)because its Katy and they never lose and 2) because he is in a video with Borat

Hofer, you're exactly right. He's is the one I'm thinking of. I knew there was a reason that it didn't look right when I typed it. Thanks for that Coach.

I won't pretend to have a full list for MA, but I will say that right now, a young(er) guy that has to be at or near the top of that list is Duane Sigsbury, currently at Billerica Memorial HS. Multiple state titles as OC at two different schools, 1-1 in title games in his first stint as HC at a small school (and was ROBBED by a ridiculous call in the loss), took over Billerica when it was down and has completely turned them around in just two years. The past 10-12 years he's had an insane run as an OC and HC.

Thanks, coach, but there have been some Friday nights where I didn't think I was the best coach in my own family, which includes my wife and two daughters.
I wouldn't put myself in the same class as some already mentioned here. Especially my friend John Herrington, the best our state has ever had.
And I'm retired, not active, now too.
Your boss, Kurt Richardson, has been underrated in my opinion.

Herrington is absolutely the best. KR is definitely underrated and should be in the discussion. I just didn't want to hype up my own program. We have all had those rough Friday nights.

OOh I thought of one.....Coach Thompson at West Orange Stark near the Louisiana border, they have some great athletes there, but these guys intensity is on a whole new level. Rumor is that the first day of pads they have Oklahoma drill and the entire community shows up.....in West Orange, if you don't hit, you are forever shunned and your family name is tarnished. They are fun to watch fly around, won state this year with like 28 kids on the roster, but every one of them can run, and will hit you in the mouth

Coach Logan at Centenial is really good.
However, I take a lot into consideration when making my evaluation of a coach, most importantly how well does he do with the talent he has? There are some coaches here in California who have good recruiters on their staff which makes them good and there are some coaches who always seem to have talent and make the playoffs but still seem to underachieve.
In the meantime, there are a lot of underrated coaches who just work their tails off and don't have great talent but still find ways to compete year in and year out. You don't hear too many stories about those guys

I hardly know the names of any coaches outside of our district lol Yeah, that's why I only named a couple of guys who I know first hand. I also don't want to risk pi$$ing people off by leaving them off the list. Here's a guy back in PA: Jack Henzes (Dunmore) 300+ wins. I will prove my point in saying I heard of Dunmore before, could t tell you where it was though. Had no clue their coach was over 300 wins. I could tell you the top teams for the most part in the state but wouldn't know their coaches from Adam. We also have over 600 teams in state as well so that adds to it.

As for the best Wing-T coaches in MO, I can think of two off of the top of my mind:
1.) Matt Webb, Maryville: look up his state championship games vs. Burroughs (Ezekiel Elliott's last game) or Seneca. Smash mouth football at its finest.
2.) Shannon Jolly, Eldon: Very, very sound and physical teams year in, year out. Rebuilt a dead program.

Chris Miller (Spartanburg) Won state titles at Byrnes and has won won and played for another at Spartanburg to add a couple off the top of my head, Lee Taylor Mauldin HS, Greenville, SCLee has done a tremendous job in a 'non-traditional powerhouse' program. The county isn't known for supporting football, but he consistently gets the most with the talent and tools he has on hand. They do a great job in the weight room, had a kid last year set the state squat record at 710 pounds. Lee has a solid staff put together that has been at the school for several years. Offense - Spread, zone read Defense - Multiple, odd front Jamie Nickels, Abbeville HS, Abbeville, SCSmall school (AA) powerhouse with multiple state championships. This school has the distinction of being the only school in the state to win state championships in 3 different classifications (A, AA, AAA). Some good solid talent in the is football town year after year. Jamie has continued a great tradition and has established a great identity on with their 'A Bone' offense. Solid staff of home grown guys that have been together for a long time. This is a football town that closes down every home game Friday night. People get off work, go to the stadium to lay out blankets to save their seats then head out grab some dinner before the game. Offense - Flex/Wish Bone Defense - 50 Don Frost, Christ Church Episcopal School, Greenville, SCIn a state that doesn't really have dominant private schools (at least in football), Don has taken a decent/average program and made them a small school powerhouse. They set the state record (ended last season) of 55 consecutive wins, winning a string of state championships along the way. CCES basically is the reason that the state changed it's classification system. Don brought his brother along with him and has built a tremendous staff. Offense - Spread, passing Defense - Odd front (not completely sure) Mark Hodge, Chapman HS, Inman, SCMark has consistently created success every in program he has been a part of building. His prior stop as HC was at a school where nobody wanted to work, and he willed them to more success than they had seen in several decades. Solid X and O coach that has a plan in place. Offense - Spread, balanced Defense - Odd, multiple Phil Strickland, Newberry HS, Newberry, SCPhil is a HOF coach that has won championships at multiple schools. In the day and age of "spread 'em out and sling it", his kids play hard nose, down hill football. His teams are always well prepared and are always in the hunt at the end of the season. Offense - Pro I Defense- Even, C3

In your opinion, who are some of the BEST * ACTIVE* high school football coaches in your state and why? Most of us probably know the best coaches in our own respective state but I thought it would be interesting to see who others name in nearby states who are still coaching. I know for our program, I am always searching out successful coaches to not only talk X & O's but program building stuff as well. I will include Ohio and Michigan in my response since I have spent 10 years coaching in Ohio and this past season as the Head Coach at a school in Michigan... OhioMike Vicars / Tim Spiess- Swanton High School Tim Goodwin- Marion Local Greg Dempsey - Toledo Central Catholic Chip Otten (John Reed too RIP)- Coldwater Steve Specht- St. Xavier Steve Channel- Miamisburg Michigan
John Herrington- Farmington Hills Harrison (which is closing at the end of next year) Tom Mach- Detroit Catholic Central Ralph Munger- Rockford John Shillito- Zeeland West Jack Giarmo- Monroe SMCC Personally I would like to know who the best Wing-T coaches are in your state or successful coaches at small programs...looking forward to your responses
