I won't pretend to have a full list for MA, but I will say that right now, a young(er) guy that has to be at or near the top of that list is Duane Sigsbury, currently at Billerica Memorial HS. Multiple state titles as OC at two different schools, 1-1 in title games in his first stint as HC at a small school (and was ROBBED by a ridiculous call in the loss), took over Billerica when it was down and has completely turned them around in just two years. The past 10-12 years he's had an insane run as an OC and HC. That's a good name, dude wins wherever he goes! One on the South Shore in MA (more my area) is Pat Kingman from Middleboro. Has college experience, and turned a program that had like 2-3 winning seasons in like 20-30 years into one of the best teams in their division. Spread offense but they play with physicality too, have gotten bumped by small margins deep in playoffs against the best. He's a first class gentleman too, met him through my basketball season and he was a part of the athletic staff. Lots of respect for him. Lou Silva from Marshfield is one the legends, has overseen transition from a (double) wing-t offense to a no huddle spread wing-t look. Has a great staff, community support, and he seems like a great guy too. I know he's had a young o-coordinator (Chris Arouca) get a head gig, he'll be solid I think soon too. They've gone from UC DW-T to a hydrid no-huddle dw-t team. Defense is solid as a rock every year. Had a ton of great years, had one year recently when hey went 0-11. State champs two years later, lost this year late in playoffs. Recently, had a TE/DE who committed to BC as a junior but then got offered by Alabama, which is unheard of around here and his recruitment blew up. Ended going to Penn St. Cool documentary on their state title run up if you have an hour to kill.

Of course in MA I suppose you also have to put John DiBiaso at Everett. Sure he's got crazy talent, but that record is ridiculous. Went from DTDW to spread option (granted was done to showcase his son at QB) and just kept winning.

As a young coach in Utah, here is my list. Feel free to correct me or add on.
Utah
Fred Fernandes - Roy High School - In 12 seasons as a head coach at Northridge and Woods Cross, his teams amassed an 87-43 record, including three 5A state titles with Northridge from 2000 to 2002. Runner up in 2014. He wins wherever he goes.
John Colosimo - Juan Diego Catholic High School - 200+ Wins, 6 State Championships 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2015. (Split back Veer) Winningest Program in the state.
Brandon Matich - East High School - He was a rival coach, but I have so much respect for him and what he's doing. Took a broken East team and turned them into contenders every year and finally won the 4A State Championship this year. (Flexbone Offense)
Cole Meacham - Manti High School - 4 State Championships, does the best with what he has. Has won 3 games against Juan Diego. Constantly gives bigger better teams headaches. (Fly offense)
Eric Kjar - Jordan High School - Offensive Genius, doesn't matter what players he has, he will breed a quarterback and always lead the state in total yards. Won state in 2012 when he was paired with a great defense.
Cary Whittingham - Timpview High School - Dynasty. Since 2004 Timpview has won 8 State Championships. Coach Whitt took over in 2012 and right off the bat he won 3 in a row finally losing this year to East in the Title game. No matter who the coach is for Timpview they will win, but Coach Whitt has done a great job reloading and carrying the torch. (His brother is HC for Utah Kyle Whittingham.)
*Dave Peck - retired but coming back this year - Bingham High School - In his 15 years as the head coach at Bingham, Peck compiled a record of 154-37. His teams won 10 region championships, five state titles including 2 of the last 3, and finished second twice. He built a powerhouse in 5A.
*Larry Wall - retired this year - Bountiful High School - Wall guided Bountiful to a 238-116 record, with four state championships (1990, 1991, 2002, 2003) and six region championships (1990, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2010, 2012).
*Mike Favero - retired this year - Logan High School -149-60, with five state titles, in 17 years atop the program. Favero was known for his offensive ingenuity, as one of the first local prep coaches to popularize the spread formation.

mariner42 - LOL... I wish Zach. I would agree with tanavea on that list as I have loads of experience with each of them except Whittingham: Peck - He is my father's best friend from HS and my Head Coach at Cyprus for 2 years Favero - My 1st coaching job was on his staff while I was at USU helping with QB's (Riley Nelson made life easier there) Matich and his brother have been around for a while. He offered me a job on his staff when I left my HC gig Colosimo - coached my little brother to an all-state QB and won a state championship his sophomore year before concussions ended his career 3 games into his Jr year... my parents live in the house he grew up in now. Cole - Love Cole. He came to our clinic both years and is a great guy. He is at smaller level than I've coached at, so never coached with/against him, but they are good every year despite not pulling top-notch talent year in and year out Freddie wins wherever he goes. Amazing guy. His DC and I are real close ejones54 - If I ever get another HC gig, he will be offered my DC job and steal him away from Freddie if I can Eric and I are in the QB/OC group so we run into each other ALL the time. Our QB is actually a transfer from his program Larry is a legend. Played against him when I was in high school. Only other guy I would add would be Sonny Sudbury, who coached for 30+ years and is in the Utah Hall of Fame for coaches... he was my HC my senior year of HS and gave me my 1st OC job at my alma matter when I was just 24 years old (plus my first game as HC when he got tossed one game that season) Love all those guys... 90% of what I know is "borrowed" from those guys. Great group. So many others that are really good, but that group is the elites in these parts.

In Alabama Josh Nibblett of Hoover has had the most success lately. Up until this year he had played in 6 or 7 straight state championship games in the highest classification. Keith Eldridge who just left Leeds for Pell City has a great team year in and year out and has won 3 or 4 state titles. Mark Freeman now at Thompson has won everywhere he has been. Brent Hubbard at Maplesville has built a small school dynasty. I think Laron White at Tanner is as good as anyone. Paul Benefield at Fyffe High School is definitely the best Wing T coach in the state!

I 100% agree with what your saying. heres a question for ya, and all these posters can any of these guys go to school A that hasnt won games in years and still have success? its easy to coach athletes. jimmies n joes make the program go. x n os make up very little. we can scheme with the best of em, but if my best player is 6'0 185 lbs plays all 4 specials, inside linebacker and tailback. and you have 20 of him. its not scheme. some of the best coaching I have ever done was on a 3-7 team a few years back and a 4-6 team about 10 year ago. maximized our potential. did everything we could to get the most out of our kids. how many of us are out there, but dont get recognized as the good/average/best in state because we never won squat?? just sayin.

I'm sure a lot of the coaches mentioned would tell you that it has more to do with players than coaches. I was part of a state championship staff in baseball and the most important thing we did all year was to make sure our guys got on the bus.
This doesn't discount what coaches can do, but it surely helps when you've got dudes.

Without a doubt the best coaches do not always win state titles. Some do, but many do not. Luck of the genetic draw has a LOT to do with it. Sometimes teams win despite average to poor coaching because talent is superior. Great talent and great coaching equals dominance.

I will go with the 3 states I have coached HS ball in: Arizona: Great State for football, but you have the Chandler schools, then you have everyone else. The open enrollment in this state has allowed there to be a few programs that basically recruit all of the talent in their district. 1) Steve Belles, Hamilton HS Runs the best program in the state. They churn out talent every year and run like a machine. His infrastructure and other than football organization is off the charts. Plus they develop QB's like no other program in the state. 2) Norris Vaughn, Mt. Pointe Motivator supreme. He took Mt. Pointe from irrelevant to one of the best programs in the state. The man knows his football and knows how to change culture. 3) Paul Morro, Marcos De Niza (Formerly Poston Butte, and Blue Ridge) What he did at Blue Ridge was once in a generation. What he did at Poston Butte hopefully was a fluke and not a reflection of him as a coach. If he can win at Marcos he will only add to his legend.
California: This is hard because of the size of the state, but having recruited the state when I coached college ball I have a pretty good understanding of who these coaches are and what they do.
1) Now that Lad is not running the show at DLS, and he should be the top of the national list for HS coaches as far as I am concerned, we will go with another coach. My new #1 is Mike Alberghini, Grant HS. Coach Al has taken a school that is literally in the Ghetto into a national powerhouse. He changes the offense and the defense depending on his talent level, he keeps his kids eligible and out of jail, and he churns out NFL talent every year. The kids and the community love Coach Al, and they would protect him with their life. He truly cares about his players and it shows in how they play for him. 2) Bruce Rollinson, Mater Dei. Mater Dei has more resources than maybe any other high school in the nation besides the IMG academy. And Coach Rollinson doesn't let them go to waste. He has established a culture at Mater Dei that is second to none. The players that have come out of that high school, Heisman trophy winners, NFL players galore, D1 talent every year. 3) Matt Logan, Centennial(Corona) Centennial was one of the easiest schools to recruit from. Coach Logan had everything so streamlined, and he pushed his players at every level. Their offense is amazing to watch in action. Their defense takes their studs and utilizing their athletic ability better than anyone. They win, they win, and they win again, until they face De La Salle(except the year they had Vontaze)
North Dakota: Small school football. Very few athletes that can compete nationally, but there are some solid coaches in the State.
1) Rod Oksendahl, Fargo Shanley Coach Oksendahl built a small school juggernaut at Cavalier high school. He knows how to develop a winning culture. He is doing the same now at a larger school in Fargo.
2) Mark Gibson, Bismarck HS He wins every year and the program is a machine. They always produce great teams and haven't had a losing record since 1999.
3) Larry Sandy, Velva/Sawyer He consistently gets over 75% of the male population at the school out for football every year. They are one of the most physical teams in the state every year. They have a great off-season lifting program. He has kids from this small town every year that go off to play college football at some level. 10 State Championships since 1975. He has the blueprint for how to win in a small town.
