I am the head coach and OL coach. We have HUDL sideline for the first time this year and a big 20x10 tent with sides and folding chairs. I have realized in the first 2 weeks I need to be looking at replays and coaching offense more, OC is in the box during game.
Does anybody appoint someone other than yourself to call the timeouts so they can stay with the defense and call one if need be, so you can be back coaching your side of the ball? I am thinking about trying it tonight. The refs always ask me pre-game if I am gonna be the one that calls the timeouts, so I am assuming I have the option.

"OC" TO QB: Timeouts: . . . you will call some and I will call some. No one’s fault . . . just the way it is . .. do not get frustrated, that is why we have them . . . so lets use them especially in the first half! Always a Positive Demeanor!

Thanks, we play NFHS rules and we have to designate one coach to call timeouts, if I am understanding it correctly. Last week my defensive coaches tried to call a timeout and were shouting at me to call it and so I started yelling but the refs didn't give it to us and the explanation was that with multiple coaches yelling for a timeout they could not know that I was actually calling it and that we had to make sure I was the only coach asking for a timeout.

"OC" mostly, & SOMETIMES the QB out of necessity (no one else)!

Though the rules state otherwise, most refs in my state will grant them when called to whomever. If someone definitively is calling for a timeout they'll give it (for better or worse).

Ours usually do too, but they did not last week. It may have been an excuse because they screwed up, but we have to deal with it. I am just thinking I have go to be with the OL over at the tent and coaching them up more and that means I am not at the field to call timeout for the defense if there is an "emergency."

As a defensive coordinator most of the timeouts have been allocated to the offensive side of the ball. One of the things we have taught our kids is when possible (won’t do major damage to us) instead of calling timeout just jump offsides to delay things. We did this a couple times over the last few years when we had 10 on the field or when they came out in a crazy formation. I will only do it with a kid I trust to not make a poor decision like jumping offsides on 4th and 3 to extend a drive. Very rarely happens but has saved us a couple timeouts here and there.

I once lost a game early in my HC career in part because a HS player called a time-out we didn't need.
After that I made it clear to captains (and officials) only I would call time-outs.
If you get a Delay of Game penalty that's on you coach.
But it's only five yards.
Time outs can be like gold especially at EOG.
Plus obviously you can stop the clock offensively by getting the ball out of bounds, making a 1st Down, incomplete pass, or grounding the ball legally (Clock Play).
Don't leave it up to kids.

Some of the worst in-game coaching mistakes I have seen are:
Calling Time-Out when the clock is already stopped (after ball is out of bounds, or a first down),
and calling a time-out when deciding to go for it or not on 4th Down in four-down territory.
In the latter case the HC should already have decided before the 3rd Down play is run and also be thinking of the play to call if the 1st Down is not made, or to kick without wasting a time out.
I have seen coaches-teams lose games because they blew time outs in above manners and not have them when they needed them.

Worst I've ever seen (Thankfully not in a game in which our team was playing) was as a team was preparing to punt near mindfield with seconds left in the third quarter of a close game. As for the OP, only our HC calls a timeout.

That is bad. Like burning a TO to decide whether to kick an extra point or go for two.
