I have been reminded, more and more recently, that the team used to have the player names on the back of the jersey. I see a lot of videos where the teams have the player names on the back. Right now I really don't care about why or why not to have the names, I'm looking for a practical way of doing this.
At a previous stop the Boosters paid to have the players names printed on a cloth tag that was sewn onto the back of the jersey. They kept the name tag and used it for multiple seasons. That worked as it allowed the team to keep the jerseys from year to year yet still have the players name on the jersey.
A coach here offered that he could get 'discount' jerseys with the players name on the back all printed up. Player would keep the jersey at the end of the season. So the team/Boosters would be buying less expensive jerseys each year.
Last year I had the names printed on the jersey for the last game for the seniors, and then they got to keep the jersey. But that was because the jerseys were 6 years old and Russell is no longer in the business, so I can't replace them. I figured that I may as well get rid of them because we have practice jerseys all over the place (I found a cabinet that had jerseys, folded, in cardboard boxes, never been used).
So how do you put the names on the jerseys without breaking your bank every year?

I have the kids pay @ 22 bucks total for the home and away name plates. They can only wear them if they hit a minimal level in the weight room. No punishment, just reward. They are sewed on and can come off pretty easily.

Program I'm familiar with does the following:
Kids sell tickets for a raffle. This happens starting in January and runs into the spring. The money the kids raise goes directly to pay for the following:
* a practice jersey with their name printed on it. Kids keep these from year to year and the colors alternate each year, so they can easily two platoon. * Shorts (Nike, drifit, printed, no pockets) that they wear for practice. * Spirit pack t-shirt. * A copy of the season highlight DVD.
Kids love it. Coaches love it. They look like an organized team when they practice. Kids are all on equal footing for having equipment, to some extent.
I mention that because adding something like name plates to that package would be relatively affordable, then they'd just have to be sewn on.

This is way simpler than you think. If you use a uniform vendor such as Ripon, they keep your pattern on hand for ever. You buy the 1st set of jerseys with no names. Your players pick the number they want, you charge them the replacement cost of the jersey + the name (vinyl letters are cheap $15). You send them to local apparel shop and have the names put on. Then you contact Ripon and order your replacement jerseys for the next year. Only do home jerseys. The kids then keep the jersey as a keep sake. Mom happy, Dad happy, Kid happy. School board happy because you have a net ZERO cost for your home uniforms every year. More money for helmets, footballs ect. we did this at my old school, everyone happy, we left now they don't, everyone complaining....why cause a problem you don't need to. Ripon Jerseys are awesome, and little known fact most NFL teams actually get their jersey's from Ripon, they just sew on the swoosh...

Never heard of Ripon but it sounds like a decent operating model. I'll be checking them out. Thanks

Not everyone is in the same boat to have kids buy jerseys.

I am an assistant right now but one day I want my own program and in my years of playing football I have gone back and forth about names on back but I think when I am afforded the opportunity to run a program it will be a GPA requirement that goes with name on the back, I think it needs to be a reward for the STUDENT-athletes and I like the idea of weight room goals.

I know I'm a dinosaur, and I know this wasn't even the question ... but in my circle the only thing dumber than names on the back of the uniforms would be names on the back of SOME of the uniforms.

As Simba told Scar: The responsibilities of head coach are no longer my concern.
Thanks for the input guys, but as of today I am no longer the head coach.

That stinks. Sorry to hear that. But at least you don't have to worry about crap like names on jerseys.

Imagine your HC wants to put the helmet sticker (as in, 4"x6" logo) on only SOME helmets as a reward. We look like the little sisters of the poor.

I'm one of the nameplates you earned by hitting lifting standards or hitting a high number of summer workouts. I have no problem with some having nameplates. If ANYTHING helps me get more kids in the weight room, I feel it's worth it. I've seen no negatives from it. It doesn't mean that w/o the nameplate you don't start. One year Kids were talking about coach bias which I feel I'm not towards who starts and I had a kid tell me I was biased towards kids who worked hard and did all of the workouts. I told him-guilty as charged.

Part of our deal is everybody looks the same on game day: same uniforms, same colored socks, same American flag stickers on helmets. You know, kind of like a ... what the word? Oh, yeah ... team. You have my sympathy.

This is why we've avoided it over the years... We've worked it in a number of different ways but we've almost always ended up with kids without names on their jerseys. Then it starts to look like a goofy youth football league team.

If we made the playoffs we would put their names on the back.

We put our motto on the back of the jersey. If the kid wants to buy jersey at end of year he can. Every jersey says ‘angel strong’ on the back.
