This is a basketball story, but I still thought it was funny enough to share. We do team prayer with our opponent before every home game, and last season a kid from the opposing squad volunteered to pray. His prayer went something like this: "Dear Lord, keep everyone safe, help both teams play to the best of their abilities, etc." Then out of nowhere he ends it with "and thank you Lord for this food." Both teams busted out laughing, and the kid looked embarrassed to say the least. We went on to win...

The opposing teams praying together thing is so weird to me. We played a team and I'm getting ready to send the kids over to the area behind the uprights so that we can talk. Our HC says "Their HC wants us all to pray together." "Wtf. Why? We just beat them and we're a public school." We get there and I'm thinking "I want to see the joker who needs us all to partake in communion right now." Turns out the HC of the other team is my cousin! I didn't even know lol.

Haha now that's funny. I personally wouldn't ask a public school to pray with us before talking to their HC. We're a private school that for the most part only plays private school teams, so prayer is expected.

A couple years ago after a game we joined another public school in a player led prayer.

good story lol
have to admit the team prayer thing always makes me uncomfortable as an educator i dont care one way or another if you're religious or not, but always feels weird when everyone circles up to pray, i always think man, good thing no one feels uncomfortable, complains to mom and dad about HAVING to pray with the team, and their parents go and sue or something

Actually had to talk to one of our coaches about that. He kept huddling everyone up for a team prayer. I grabbed him after the second time. "Dude, we're a public school. Have a voluntary prayer with players separate from everyone. All it takes is Amit Sharma and Ahmad Bakhtari to tell their parents and we've got a huge problem on our hands." Bay Area living. Gotta be cool with all that out here.

I coached for 4 years at a private school. We had prayers with public schools a couple times a year but not always. Every single time one of the kids from a public led the prayer.

We are a public and pray about 75% of the time with the other team after the game. However, we are located in the buckle of the Bible Belt.

One of the coolest experiences I had was coaching against Servite of Anaheim (Catholic school). Before the game the chaplain led the crowd in the Lord's Prayer, and at the end witnessing about 2000 people end the prayer with the sign of the cross.

Just a personal opinion as a Christian. Not trying to create any dissension No need to concern yourself with dissention.
Its your opinion and its a good one. Take a look around, we could use a healthy dose of prayer and humility before God.

I think I would get ran out of town if we didn't pray before and after games(bible belt living). I think it's weird that you think its weird.
I literally have never seen a game that didn't start and end in prayer.
I'm not even that religious of a guy

we pray before and after, i think after a game it sets the tone, this is a game enjoy the time you have and feel blessed, i've bben to places that pray and don't, you have to do what feels comfortable and know your environment, there have been times after a game that i didn't want to, but still did it, because to me it stops all the emotions and brings things back to normal

Definitely can see the calming down aspect and agree with the "knowing your situation" sentiment. Sorry Dubber. Gotcha.

Cliff notes version of Constitutional cases on the subject of public school and speakers: If the group invites someone to speak, then the someone can invoke God, as long as the stipulation is not to specially do so. IE he's invited and 'does his thing'
If a kid is the someone, then basically the stipulations are the same, he can speak as he wishes.
