I assume everyone has started practice, or is close. So, hows it going? We have 26 kids (and because of the multipler, we play in Class 3), we are soft, and cant tackle a man in a phone booth. Other then that? We're great! Attitudes are good, so there's that.

We have our first practice today, helmets and footballs only for today and tomorrow, section mandate. We're looking to have 70+ players for 2 levels, better players today than we had last year. We averaged 40 players per day for our summer conditioning/weight/football practices. We're all excited about getting started.

My senior nickel LB/$S/Overhang/Invert/Spur/Space Monkey in a home scrimmage today comes tipping off the field after a muddle tackle in space on a screen. I thought he got his toe stepped on or bumped knees or something. So I asked, "What happened? You get your toe stepped on?" He say "Nah" and proceeds to the bench, or at least I thought. Next series he's no where to be found. The series after that, he's back up beside me ready to go back in.
The defense comes off the field and we're heading the bench to talk/correct mistakes, sos I ask him where he went. He says, "I went back to the locker room to put on my shoulder brace", as he lifts his jersey to show me.
He has had 3 shoulder dislocations in the previous 2 years. I've told him numerous times over the last 6 months that he has to straight forward with me when it hurts, if he gets dinged, when he can't do a specific lift in the weight room, what the trainer says, etc....... I can miss him for a couple of practices, but not for 2 months. AND HE DOESN'T WEAR HIS SHOULDER BRACE?!?!?!?
I appreciate his desire to be tough, play through pain, be a leader, etc..... But da um Bo, be SMART.

Young for us. Only 7 seniors. We have around 40 players, grades 9-12. Lots of team speed, great attitudes, and quite a few mistakes. Oh well, learning experiences for all.

We've dropped to 63 player or so, 30 players per team. Lost some to moving and such, but lost a number to cross country and water polo. Both coaches were apparently actively recruiting kids. First season for the water polo team and the cross country has been very successful. They have a t-shirt that says 'Real men run miles, not yards'.
The players that are here are those that want to be here and are pretty well stoked about playing so we will be fine.
Does anyone have concussion impact testing as a requirement before they step on the field? This is an AD thing, last couple of years it was all athletes, now it's just football only.

LMAO. A "real men do cross country" shirt? Really? That's hilarious.

Cross Country t-shirt - This was done by the coach, it's not a kid with a printer. I'm considering buying them shirts that say 'Real athletes support each other' or something like that. It's funny the first few times you see some cross country gazelle runner wearing one of these, but when you lose a couple of good DB's to cross country, and the word is the coach is picking my pocket, it stops being funny.

I'd suggest you put a whooping on the coach, but he'd probably out jog you. Hope it gets better, coach. Good thing is that there are tons of things you can do that are way more exciting than XC. Have camps, spirit rallies, music at practice, shirts of your own, have kids build muscles in the weight room, incorporate cheerleaders, etc. Plenty of ways to counter them. Have you ever seen a XC highlight tape? Boring as hell.

I had a kid bring in a Dr's note today. The great new is it says he can do any football activty as long as it doesn't involve, running, jumping, cutting, planting, or twisting. Everytime I read it I laugh.

Taking over as Oline Coach at 5A school here in La. Returning 1 starter who's a Sr. He was the least talented of the 5 last year. The rest are Sophomores. Backs are really good, got 4 good ones in Flexbone. Despite all that we started moving the football in scrimmage work against our D (who are very good) We scrimmage a local school with A LOT of athletes on Friday. We will see how it goes.

Splendidly for us...first week - 3 players down
1. TE/DE - breaks ankle running around a pool 2. OT/DT - breaks arm playing "500" - I didn't even know people still played that 3. Backup TE/DE - Breaks foot - ranover by a golf cart in his neighborhood
I told them today if anyone else gets hurt not on a football field they're gonna wish they had died instead

Update, had our third scrimmage today. The same kid that had the shoulder, hurt his foot yesterday so he was out. The backup was playing himself out of the job, so we took a Soph and decided to give a go (this is our last scrimmage) to see what he can do. About the third play HE dislocates his shoulder. We had an emergency plan to have our Rover be ready to get some reps at the Spur/Over Hang/Invert/etc.... PLUS we had an injury at LB at a scrimmage last week (broken leg) and our MLB left to attend his brother's basic training graduation, so I couldn't steal a LB to fill in. PLUS my best Rovetback up hurt his toe in the scrimmage on Tuesday, so I was short handed there......
I felt like a one legged man in a butt kicking contest tonight.

Another update I forgot to share - we are a small private school and played a solid 3A public program in a scrimmage, and "won" 3 scores to 1... I had to then sit through a board meeting where the vice-chair explained that he paid money so his son could play against "small private school kids, not bigger, faster, stronger ones"...

Had our first scrimmage last night, a mixed bag. Our OL is a work in progress but we knew that. We only have one starter back (Technically, it's two but one got moved to FB). There's only one senior starter and one of the juniors is really a soph because he didn't play last year (Suspected concussion. Turned out that he had headaches because he needed glasses. On the other hand, he's 320 and looks like a thick 270 so...). It didn't help that we had no idea that the other guys were going to be in Bear. No complaints. It was a good lesson. IMO, the worst thing that can happen to a young group is to look good against a bunch of scrubeenies. Getting your a$$ handed to you in a scrimmage keeps you humble and coachable.

yesterday was better. we got our base formations in (Tight Double Wing /Tight Stack (Stack I), and Slot Double Wing / Slot Stack) our line is still...developing. if anyone has any ideas on how to get kids to fire forward instead of step back...im all ears.
im having a, not so strange problem. a few of our kids have nagging injuries - ankles etc. but they wont tell us. so i jump on a kid for dogging it, come to find out from the trainer, hes had an ankle sprain for 2 weeks....

We won our first game last night. Ran power all damn night. Could've pitched a shutout but got a lot of kids in the game. Took 'em 2 series against our thirds to get in the end zone. Haven't watched the film yet so I still feel good about it lol.

We've got our 1st game this week vs. the #2 team in the state, then next week vs. the #1 team in the state... we will find out how good we are real quick. Camp has gone well and I'm ready for the season to get started. Here is the preseason video with some highlights of our returning starters from last season. It's go time...

Holy cow! School doesn't start until after Labor Day. We have pay to play fees. The office lady who handles it is on vacation this week. We still have 50 kids who still need to pay.
One of our captains and one of our QBs were caught with weed in the car. They are both out for at least the first game.
This off season has been a freaking circus.

We had a projected number of 30 kid at the end of the school year. At our orientation meeting last Wednesday we had 50, with 5 that we knew would be missing due to being international students. We are still going strong, no one has quit and we actually were just alerted to possibly 3 more athletes registering for school this week. First season for our staff at this school. Boys are excited, but it is progressing slowly. No spring or summer programs so we are trying to teach completely new schemes to a group of kids who many are first time players. BUT, it is nice to finally be in season. Good luck this season my coaching brethren.

Our team has shrunk from 35 to 25. We haven't seen our DB coach in 3 weeks. My starting SS decided to skip practice to go to a leadership pizza party where he won a trophy for the balloon toss. A former player from this previous season was shot and killed a block away from our school. This season is shaping up to be a rough one.
