For six months I drove 140 miles round trip, three days a week for strength training and conditioning, as an assistant with no guarantee of getting a teaching job in the fall. I got the job.

I had an experience very simular to eastern. When I was hired to be a GA, they wanted me down for spring ball. It was 90 min. each way for the 15 practices.

I resigned from Kutztown as much due to the drive to and from as anything, it weighed heavily on my decision with gas at 3 bucks a gallon...just not worth it if the situation isnt right. now, if id been the head hazza gazza, itd be worth it!

My first year as a teacher/coach, I drove 2 hours one way to get to work!
I was living way up in Northwest Illinois (about 20 miles south of Wisconsin and 20 miles east of the Mississippi) and the only school that offered me a job was over 100 miles away (social studies teachers are a dime a dozen in Illinois).
Anyway, my wife had a pretty good job so we decided to suck it up for a year and I would just make the commute every day. My folks lived about 35 miles from the school so some nights, I would just crash there.
What really sucked about working there is that they didn't even have football. I had to coach junior high girl's volleyball, freshmen boy's basketball, and junior high track.
Basketball season was brutal...I was the head freshman coach and we practiced at 6:00 AM. I had to be on the road by 3:45 AM so I could get to school before the kids and get the lights turned on in the gym and the equipment out for practice.
Everything worked out in the end. I busted my butt down there and did a good job, got a great recommendation from the principal, and that opened up a lot of doors that had been firmly closed the year prior.
In hindsight, it was a tough year but well worth it. I wouldn't be teaching and coaching football in a great district with awesome kids and supportive parents if it wasn't for the first year.

My first coaching job was a two hour commute ... it was worth it ... that was 22 years ago - withint htree years I was the DC and within 5 I had my first head coaching job ....
