We had a kid yesterday show up to practice with his arm wrapped in plastic saying he couldn't do anything because he just got a tattoo. He snapped the ball to the QB during Pat & Go, but besides that was just watching everything. When we transitioned to 7v7, the guys were slow getting out there so our HC had everybody go back to the sideline to run onto the field. When the human canvas just stood there our HC asked him what he was doing. He responded, "Coach, my tattoo artist told me I couldn't do anything at practice today." Our HC came back with "Well you should go play football for your tattoo artist then." Everybody got a good laugh out of that.

I'm brand new to the program, so I don't know all the dynamics yet, but it was very playful between the HC and him and he laughed about it too. I'm not too terribly worried about it.

Kids don't respond well to being made fun of in front of their peers especially if something like his tattoo is as important to him as football.

It won't be a loss.

I'm pretty open to all of the newer thoughts on coaching: staying positive, building relationships, not embarrassing, etc. etc. etc. But I tease and have been teased a lot. Kid gets a new haircut, he's gonna hear it. Kid is wearing something flashy, he's gonna hear it. I come to practice accidentally wearing my shorts backwards (true story), I'm going to hear it. It's part of the fun of a football team. I think if most kids know it's not personal, they're fine with it.

Our HC has known that kid long enough to know the kid is ok with being teased. The kid was fine with it. He hasn't missed a day since then.

No one come one of our practices then... Our kids are savages. Our best teams record wise were the ones that were the most savage to each other. When they didn't rip each other to shreds was when we knew we were in for a long season.

Maybe a hot take but I've found that if a kid can take a joke he can take coaching. Maybe just my experience but the best players on the teams I've been a part of are almost always the guys can can handle some light ribbing, and often give it right back. I'm not talking about bullying, or making fun of physical things, obviously. That has no place. edit - OK I've read the rest of the thread it is definitely not a hot take.
