In a Louisiana playoff game this past Friday, a Coach had his QB take a knee on 4th down on their own 14 leading 28-26 because according to him the sideline official told him if you snap it at 1 the game will be over. That didn't happen, opponents kicked 31 yard field goal with 0.6 seconds left to win the game. bossierpress.com/high-school-football-benton-suffers-heartbreaking-controversial-loss-in-second-round-of-playoffs/There is a write up of the events and below is a video. Should be cued up to the last 2 plays. On the previous play the team attempted the Raven's strategy of holding everyone and letting the QB run off clock, but an inadvertent whistle stops the play.

I kind of think he has a point... Does an inadvertent whistle give the offense the choice of the result of the play or replay the down? I would have done it again. If he snapped it at 1... by time the qb back peddled more than a second had passed.. Plus your don't put time back on for an inadvertent whistle.

The video shows the fans counting down (but fans are notoriously bad counters)... and if you read the article it suggests that the sideline official who told him "just snap it at 1 you are good" was trying to convince the white hat that the officials messed it up.

I thought that if you told the refs you were kneeling, the opposition couldn't rush? At least that's how they handle it here in Illinois.
Regardless, looks like the refs got panicky and let the visiting coaches tell them what to do.
Also- how does your home clock guy screw you like that?

I think a key point here is that they were not kneeling directly. The QB was trying to run off additional clock. The time situation was such that the kneeling team could not just take a knee and let the clock run out. They needed to burn additional time with each play. How would Illinois handle that?

At least in the games I've been involved in, you just say you're kneeling and they tell the opposition to stay off your kids. I know it's JV, but my son's team ran off 20 seconds just standing in the backfield on 4th down only up 1 score. I personally have never been involved in a situation like the video.

What you described is a travesty. Of course, so is the Raven's play...which I believe should not be allowed.

There’s always 2 sides to a story and typically the truth is somewhere down the middle. I flat out don’t trust officials on anything….NEVER TAKE A KNEE ON 4th DOWN…EVER…EVER!!!

What a cluster eff. Our teams have been in this situation before. The first time I was a young coach and we gave the ball back to the opposing team and had to defend for another play. Very similar situation but there was 2 seconds on the clock. The officials asked our HC if we were going to take a knee and he said that we were going to run the clock out and then take a knee. We snap it and immediately the crew blows the whistle and we are down. The official on our sideline told the other officials we were going to take a knee so they told the other team to not rush us. But then they also called us down on the snap. 4th down...turnover on downs...1 second left. We stopped them but that taught me a really solid lesson at a young age.
You have to work these situations and talk about these situations as much as you can. And you have to know the rules. That way when an official talks you can either know what they are telling you is correct or you can ask for further clarification.
Regardless, I am never ever taking a knee there. Run the same exact play as before and it's game over.
